Mangkola Ubol- my Best bloomer this year
« on: July 18, 2008, 01:25:09 PM »
Haven't been posting many pix because my internet has been TERRIBLE, but I had to share a few from today.
Mangkola Ubol has bloomed like crazy this year.

How big are the blooms?  They look as big as the pads.  They look wonderful.

Mangkala Ubol is one of my favorites. Mine bloomed really well last year but is not showing any signs of blooming so far this year.
Repotting it in the fall must have set it back.

Thanks Bonnie.

Alfonso the blooms are nice size but the pads don't get as large as some waterlilies.  I'll have to include my hand for comparison sometime.

Shanna, I didn't repot this year because it's in a nice size pot.  Matter of fact, I don't think I even added new fertilizer!

Sue what is one more stocktank! ;)

The Color seems to vary slightly from time to time with mine, does anyone else find this?  Sometimes more pinkish, other times more orangey.

;D lol, that is so true  I've written it enough just recently that I can spell it, but I'm sure will regress soon enough.

Once you get used to the name it is fine.  I had trouble with the spelling at first.  It is an excellent bloomer & grower staying fairly compact compared to lilies like Perry's Orange Sunset.
Kat

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

Hmm quite right Kat, it's Mankala Ubol, with an A, I see after a quick squiz at the WGI.
Im still puzzled at how well these hardies do in Thailand. I visited the international water-lily collection there and was blown over by the hardies in particular that they have growing in the large "moat". Flowers big as soccer balls on huge plants.
I saw this one it just looked other worldly, stunning. Obviously the distinction hardy and tropical has been lost, at least in warm climates. Bearing in mind that Thailand is more or less hot all year round hovering in the mid ninties, with "cooler" nights in the mid seventies in the "winter".

Think I might try this one myself here in HK.

Sorry I do normally spell correctly.
I was going off of the name of the pix and was in a hurry!  I DO have the label spelled correctly at least!
And  at least I didn't leave out the G ! ;)

Touché!  @O@ Ubol might be a good compromise. Any one know what this means maybe a direct translation would help.Unless it's someones name. I still call "king of Siam' king of Siam when we all know its not that at all but "Chalong Kwan", which I don't even think means King of anything.

Yes, the flower color varies on mine as well. The first year I had it the flowers were the most unusual color of pinky-bronze. The bottom petals were almost brown and the center of the flower was pink. The second year they were yellow in the center and pink-bronze towards the bottom.

Mine finally bloomed over the weekend.  @O@ I didn't think it even had any buds developing. It really put up a bud fast.
It was starting to close when I found it.
