« on: July 25, 2008, 09:50:34 AM »
Something is eating holes in my lily pads, can anyone tell me what I can do?  I don't see any bugs. :-\
Thank you, Kathy

Could be aphids but for me the culprit is usually these very, very tiny clear worms. If you turn the pads over and look at the back of the pad you will see these tiny little clear worms squirming all over. They really do a number on pads. They are really hard to see so you might need to use a magnifying glass or use a flashlight at night to check for them.
I usually have to remove damaged pads and use the hose and my hands to rub them off of all the other pads.
Aphids will look like a bunch of tiny dark spots on the top of the pads. Almost looks like someone threw a handful of pepper on the lily pads. You can use the spray on a hose to wash them off. Do it everyday and they will stay under control.

Could it be snails?  I had that happen to my pads last year in one of my lily barrels.  Snails took over until I picked them all off and out of the pot!

Nope, it is definitely those little 'glass worms' that Desertponder mentioned.
I had an infestation too a couple years ago, and if you don't have perfect eyesight, you would not be able to see these little glass worms.
They are not more than 1/4" long when full grown, and most are much smaller than that and about the width of a cats whisker. Clear as glass.
You can buy Safer Brand Caterpillar Killer too, which uses a type of bacteria to kill the caterpillars, totally safe for all pond critters and all critters that drink from the pond.
The Safer Brand Caterpillar Killer comes in a little 8 fl. oz. jug that is a concentrate. (comes in bigger sizes too but the 8 oz. jug lasts all season for me) You must dilute it, and then dip your lilies into a bucket of it so they are completely covered, dunking all the pads under several times so even the surface of the pads come into contact with the dip. Good to have some kind of large half wine barrel sized container to do this. Do not throw out any leftover 'dip' mix, just cover the barrel so it doesn't evapaorate or get watered down by rains, and reuse. And it's a good idea to dip your infested lilies and other plants every other day for about 2 weeks to get rid of all the eggs and generations of the glass worms that hatch from any eggs. The Safer Caterpillar Killer only kills the caterpillar larva, does not work on any eggs. But it works great and isn't a toxic chemical, but a natural biological caterpillar killer!

Joyce,

Is this stuff the same thing as BT just under a brand name?
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

Yes, it is BT.
BT is not a brand name but the abbreviation for Bacillus thurengiensis.
Safer Caterpillar Killer has the strain BT var. Kurstaki in it which is the target strain for caterpillars. 8)

Lots of brands make BT products, like Milky Spore, Dipel, etc, etc.

I went out tonight with the flashlight, removed a few leaves and looked at them, I see nothing, no worms, no bugs, ugh.

At night you looked?
They'd be hard to see during the day.
They are almost microscopic.
