Changing Depth of a Blooming Lily
«
on:
August 04, 2008, 04:27:36 PM »
I came home from the August meeting of the Houston Pond Society with TWO pots of purple lilies (don't know what kind) - FREE!!. The lilies were blooming - 3-5 blooms on each plant. The man's pond was maybe 20" deep, and mine is 30"
I was wondering if placing the lilies in water that is deeper than the blooms, if they will bloom underwater? stop blooming until they can extend their stems above water? stop blooming and the flower dies? Other??

I have moved a blooming lily from a 1/2 milk crate to the bottom of the tank before...probably 6"...and it only took one day to come to the top. The bloom was still open...would be the third day. Are there more buds also? I hope it works for you.

Hello, a few blooms will open underwater but they should adjust quickly thereafter.

Of the seventy or so varieties of tropical lilies I've had over the last 15 years only Bagdad seems to have an issue with the amount of water over the crown. It seems to do best no more than six inches deep. The water temperture in a deeper pond may have an effect. Lilies I have in 28" diameter by 24" depth planter do better than the ones in my18'x6'x2' pond. I guess the water gets warmer and tropicals like warm water.

Purple = Tropical
Dah
Sorry...place the pots on a milk crate to raise the highth. Mine are in a 24" tank on top of Coke flats topped with a stepping stone...about 10" to 12" under water.

OK, thanks, all. I have one more milk crate in storage, and will get back in the pond and lift up that lily.
After, that is, the hurricane finishes passing through.

Dump mine from the plant ledge down to the 30" bottom every year after the first blossoms.
