Taro, Rush and Umbrella Palm
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:58:23 AM »
Just before I finish cleaning out the pond for the seaon will any of the above plants survive the winter in water and stay healthy? Our low's here are usually 30's. In South GA.

Your taro should be fine (depending, a little, on what type it is).  A lot of them are hardy for me here and we get a good bit colder than you.

What kind of Rush are we talking about?

Not sure about the umbrella palm . . . survived for me some years and died other years.

I think it is Pickle rush Teresa....I'll save a little bit of it all. They were all sent to me by livetogarden last year.

If the Pickle rush is blue flowered like the photo, that may be Pickerel weed, Pontederia Cordata, or possibly the taller form, Lanceolata. Don't worry about bringing that in, it is tough as old boots in solid ice

Umbrella palm can cope with a light frost, as long as the roots don't freeze solid it will be ok outdoors. That makes an easy houseplant if you have a well rooted sprig easy to snip off

If it is pickerel rush, that grows in the ditches by the side of the road all over down near you and it'll be just fine.

Thanks you all. I took a couple of pots and Sean's recipe and repotted some of each.
