I'm sure someone who knows more will respond - it has something to do with subtle differences in fin shape, etc.  I just look and see who's chasing and who's being chased at spawn time  ;)  Seems that a sure-fire way to get a male is to buy a koi and name it something female (and vice-versa)  lol

Lift the tail up a little bit and you should see.

At spawn time throw a mixtureof ice cream and pickles into your pond. any koi that come to eat are female.

stand next to the pond, look down and start talking to the fish. After the fish realize you are not feeding them right then, any fish that stay and listen are female.

Those are just a few ways to tell I am sure there are more.

Ha! Redo - that's funny.

Most female koi have a wider rib cage than males (to provide space for the eggs). Males have fins that are longer and may have a rough outer edge. When they are younger, a softer, whiter nose may indicate femininity.
Males tend to "finish" or reach their maximum beaty potential earlier.

If you are VERY careful, you can squeeze along the tummy line. Both males ad females shoud produce poop. Then the males will produce a white milly substance. Females don't.
Occassionally females will produce eggs, after the poop. But usually only if you are being TOO ROUGH with them.
