Entering final ponding month (photos)
« on: October 20, 2006, 03:03:00 PM »
Far fewer blooms these days, but I generally have some colour in the pond into earky December. Awesome weekend upon us now (even by So. Cal. standards), so time to play outside, or just while away the time pottering around.

Fisrt pic is coming up my back steps. Pond is the second elevation you see, above the "sun" hanging on the wall.
Second is Sandra Lynn
Third is a sunny, washed out view, but even one last hardy in bloom, which is late for them.

Cheers,

Mike

Great looking pics Mike. I am not sure I recognize that lily in the second pic. I would have had blooms unitl mid November but I had an emergency with ,y lily pond and had to empty it today. I hauled a pick up truck load of lilies to lawanna.

Hi Tink -
Just messing with the flag toy. I live in Los Angeles, but am from South Africa. There are so many US and Canadian flags on the forum, thought I'd add some more colour.

Cheers,

Mike

I have surely tried. Working with Sean, who was way more determined than I, we came up with several options to keep the water close to 70F. Each had it's advantages, but all fell down on the fact that it was going to be a HUGE amount of cash each winter to keep 3,400 gallons that warm.

Southern California is generally always comfortable, but not always warm. I know it seems like a joke to the rest of the country when our winter nights plummet to 40F for a few weeks - but that is enough to make the pond water too cold to allow the tropicals to bloom all the way through.

I have resigned myself to tropical pond / reflecting pool depending on the season.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike:

Too bad I didn't have much time in Pasedena I would have loved to see a few more blooms before the season ends!  You should try the steam pipes similar to Longwood.  Perhaps a solar heater, you guys still get a lot of sun even during your outright frigid winter, LOL.

Cheers,

Gary

Gary - If Sean had had his way, there would have been black hoses over my gazebo. and black rubber 'lungs' on my roof supplying warm water to my pond. (This was the fall back position from a spa heater in a huge tower next to the waterfall). In Sean's life, it is not the aesthetics, but the lilies that count.

Now the solar idea also requires major unsightly stuff in the garden - Why can't I just have everything, all the time, without having to ask for it - is that not the main reason we pay California taxes?

I want it all, and I want it now!

Cheers,

Mike

We put the black sheets of hose up on the roof at our old house in Marin County, north of San Francisco, and it kept the swimming pool warm enough to swim for all but a couple months a year.  It was a lot colder up there than in LA, we even had frosts!!  You couldn't see it as it was on the cottage roof, don't know what your roof looks like,  this one was flat so it worked.

I just love your yard Mike!  I can hardly wait until I can get back down to LA again.  Hopefully sooner than later and we'll be able to get together again for some laughs.

If I had my way, Mike would have no grass in his yard at all and there would be a solar collector on his roof that works for both heating water and for electricity.

I am glad I have had an opportunity to assist Mike with the design and plant selection for his gardens but much of what is there is of his own selection. Mike gives away too much credit for the way his yard is coming along.

Cheers,
Sean

Love your pond.  It is so interesting seeing how everyone "fits" a pond into their particular landscape.
