Fiberglass faux rock
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:40:40 AM »
I am attempting to post pics with instructions on my fiberglass rocks.
It may take a few posts to finish.

This rock was made to cover the top of my savio skimmer filter.

I used a child's plastic saucer sled for a base to work on. Added wadded ubble wrap to build size and keep it lightweight. On top of that i sprayed a can or two of great stuff foam. When the foam was set up I used a long kitchen knife to sculpt the basic shape of the rock, flatteneing out some areas.

I used fiberglass cloth from Murray's auto supply store with cans of resin. Mix according to directions.

Use plastic tarps underneath or lots of garbage bags, the resin will drip off the bottom and make a huge mess. WEAR GLOVES. This stuff is impossible to remove from your hands and wear clothes you can throw out afterwards.

I set my rock up on a small garbage can to hold it off the floor.

The bottom edges got very sharp and HARD to trim. My neighbor works on cars and used power tools to smooth them out for me.

Various spray paints were used in very light coats in many layers to get the look i wanted. I used 4 different colors of the stone type fleck paint.
You could go in with a brush and add some thin lines if you like.

Use several coats of clearcoat in matt finish to protect your rock. Mine were out all last winter with no ill effects.

Here is a picture of the rock with the great stuff foam before the fiberglass cloth and resin were added. It is o.k. to have the brain looking effect, as the fiberglass cloth will drape over it, giving a more rock like appearance.

That is the best looking faux rock I have ever seen.  Is that a real rock in front of your electic outlet.  The reason I ask is I bought one to hide my electic box from Home Depot that is shaped like that rock.  I was going to post a picture of it but I couldn't because my file type is jpeg.  I don't know what to do so I can post a picture,  can anyone tell me.
