OH MY WORD!!! A pet you say??? The bulls I knew about when I was on the farm couldn't be trusted EVER. I remember a friend of our family that was killed by a bull out in the field about 60 years ago.

That is one set of horns!!! :o :o Gracious!! Doesn't he ever use them in a threatening/nasty way?  Sure would intimidate me.

Rascal is ... ahem... a steer (shhhh, he doesn't know). :)

He's mischievous as all getout, but not malicious. He's embarrassed when he swings his head an bonks something - which happens. So you have to watch him, but its not like he's TRYING to hurt you.

The only time he gets aggressive is 1) coyotes - which he stomps. and 2) when my friend Butch brings a hay bale over. For no reason I really understand, he HAD to fight Butch's tractor. Its pretty funny.
One time Butch sent the hay over with a hand... and the guy wouldn't leave the tractor to open the gate, he was so impressed by Rascal's furor.
 lol

Sometimes Butch brings a rogue bale of straw - rough hay that really isn't any good to eat - and sets it out in the pasture for Rascal to play with. Rascal will roll and move a 1200 pound round bale of hay. Its something to watch!  @O@

When he was little, Roark halter broke him. It was necessary because he was so strong willed. Rascal hates the halter - and we haven't used it with him in years. But it was pretty funny. Roark would walk Rascal into town and back - about two miles. It always ended up being a parade. Kids would come out and cheer.  @O@

Rascal is definitely a pet.  (Savannah calls him her "lawn ornament").  He'll shake that rack at you and lower his head like he wants you to believe he's highly aggressive... but it's all an act.  Walk forward and scratch him behind the horns and he'll close his eyes in bliss and then follow you around like a puppy.  Too funny.

I hadn't been *really* up-close to him in a while, but today I was messin' with him a little after the photo shoot, I'm here to tell you that rack is pushing 7 feet from tip to tip.  Maybe a bit more.  It'll keep growing for about 3 more years (he's currently 4 years old) and then he'll be (mostly) done.  Should be well in excess of 8 feet.   :D

Giggle:  Savannah is the only person I've ever seen who can put weight on a longhorn.  (She likes to FEED things.  My waste... er waist... line is living proof. heheheh)

Rascal is a good looking fella.  Those horns/racks or whatever they are called are certainly impressive.  Looks like you are carefully keeping an eye on them while feeding him so as to avoid being "bonked"..... 8)  Is he strictly a pet or a possible meal for sometime in the future?

Da Moo, Da Rascal, are not headed for the freezer. He's too pretty. Although he can't reproduce, he's valuable as a safety. I've seen him chase coyotes and snakes. He's very protective of the calves (I think he believes they are his!  ::) )

The horns are incredibly hard and polished. But not really sharp. Still, with a 1000 pound mad animal on the other end, I think sharp would be a relative concept.  :o

When he oversteps his bounds, you can grab a horn and pin his head in position - the lever is so long, that even his massive neck can't over come a weakling like me. So he basically doesn't try.

And has no interest in trying - because he knows me as "She who brings nummies".
 @O@

He looks thin to me. :)

Yes, he will still trailer, but not because the trailer is wide. Our trailer is only 6 feet wide. he has to go in with his head sideways.  lol

The last time we took him anywhere was 2 years ago.

Rascal is a looker!  His horns are the longest horns I've ever seen on a moo.  Around here the only horns I've seen are on Cadillac, etc, and they are nowhere near as long  ;D

You sure have a way with animals!  o(:-)

What a pasture pal!! O0  Rascal needs to come spend some time at my house and stomp some coyotes for me. >:(- >:(- ;D
He's pretty cool. I had a pet sheep for years. She was 12 when she died. She didn't know she was a sheep, she always thought she was one of the dogs. ::)
