Your lilies look like they are blooming well even though it has gotten cooler.  The bridge is awesome but I'd end up falling in  ;D

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

By hand. :) I dug the holes, and then floated the posts over to the right spot. Getting them into the holes was a chore. Then I stacked cinder blocks on top to keep them in place until I could get help to lay the timbers across.

The bridge is better planned than it looks. I had a fake bridge for a long time - to see where I really wanted it. And ended up moving the fake bridge twice until I had it "right".

That's one of the things that is unfinished. I want Butch to come over with his trackhoe and push them in a little further - so the bridge is more level.

I also need to pull the nails on the walking surface - the ones sticking out are okay - I'm going to try to train a vine across it next year.

I also need to shimmy the first section. Its a little warped and wiggles when you step up on it. I don't need to be tossing children and drunks into the pond - it wouldn't be good for the water lilies.  lol

Um, am I missing something here? Is that the first board of a few that will go across. So it will only be one board wide??? I'd never try that for sure because I'd be in the pond with the drunks and kids. Also, your pond is evidently a mud bottom pond?

Yes, lucky you to have blossoms yet. 36 degrees here and my pond is so barren and cold looking.

The bridge is one board wide - but the board is 16 inches wide.  @O@
The lumber came from an old railroad trestle.

16" wide!  I didn't get that wide of a perspective from the photos and thought it would be pretty easy to loose one's balance and take a tumble into the pond.....  However, 16" is plenty wide to safely walk upon.......so long as Roark isn't behind you... {:-P;;

I really like it too.  The simplicity and the end that stops over the water.  Really nice.  Your lilies look wonderful too.

Thanks. You should SEE the Rhonda Kay - its taken off like a shot, always has nearly a dozen blooms.
Its in very shallow water, and has dried out twice  :o But it just keeps on ticking...
It was a gift from Kat, part of a trade.  o(:-)
Next spring I'm going to move it deeper.

Kat has convinced me that the plant I have known as "Director Moore" is actually "King of Siam". Its also very prolific, but in much deeper water.

Beautiful, Savannah.

Question - How on EARTH do you dig a hole in a mud-bottom pond full of water?  Doesn't it keep filling in with muck?

And then do you set the posts in concrete?  If so, how do you get it down there?  Do you use powdered mix, or mix it first and pour the "batter" into the hole?

Oh, yes. First I let the pond dry down a little - not enough to kill the fishes and pre-existing water lilies, just enough so that I could see the bottom.
Of course, the minute I started digging, the visibility was gone.
Dug a hole a little bigger than the post, through the mulm, which moves, and into the hard gumbo clay below. Then down another six inches or so - the depth of the shovel. The clay came up in lumps.
Floated the posts over, tucked the bottom into the hole, and wedged the clay lumps around it to keep it there. Then put cinderblock on top of the post to keep it in place.

It was a back breaking chore - but the results were good. @O@

DEFINATELY set up a mock bridge - here's a photo of the in between step of making the bridge. I changed the location of the bridge twice before actually setting the posts.

You don't want to do it twice.  {nono}

I didn't use any concrete.

I just came back from a trip in China and I saw a similar bridge constructed over a mud pond and thought of yours.  I like the simple lines and the thickness of the boards.  The width will still make me join in the with the kids and drunks and possibly Esther  ;D

Your lilies are so very healthy and strong!  Beautiful blooms!  Makes me want a mud bottom pond.  ::)
