Sylmar Fire and 2 lovely tee shirt models !!!!!
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:58:27 AM »
It is Smokey and dirty here.  We are about 2 or 3 miles from the blaze. very safe, but the air is awful.  The pond and cars are covered with ash.   Of course we have company on the way.
A mom and daughter.  Mom has a pond in Colorado and has visited this site.  The daughter played my granddaughter in a film.  I will post a few photos if they are worthwhile.  I mean of the soot and ash.  Sarah and her mom will be very worthwhile.  Maybe I can get them to model a tee shirt??

We haven't had any of the Santa Ana winds until this morning.  The morning the winds were blowing but we had a cloudless blue sky.  Then about 9am I smelled smoke and could see smoke rising to the east and northeast.  We are a good 50 minutes southeast of Jerry so this fire we have here is completely different.  I just heard on the radio that the one I'm smelling is probably the Corona/Green River fire.  It just jumped the 91 freeway, an 18 lane wide chunk of concrete and it is now in the city of Yorba Linda, about 15 miles away.

Blue sky this morning but not now at 1:30pm....  You get the sense we are experiencing an eclipse of the sun.

I have been wondering about you ponders in California...great pics of a hazy sun....how scary flames are with winds like that  :o

Your t-shirt models are charming also, hope you had a good time with them!

Hills and canyons covered with dry chaparral are where the danger is,  The "flats" are pretty safe.
They will rebuild again even though it is a danger.
John Stossel of ABC has often wondered why 99% of the taxpayers must pay for the 1% who build in hazardous areas.  He himself had a beach home in NC and the government compensated him for the loss.
He questioned the logic of this.  He and others rebuilt again.  It is only a question of time until it happens again!
We had the Northridge quake and did get some FEMA money. Heck all California is quake area.  Hardly a foolhardy choice.

It's completely calm here this morning but the fires are still burning 12-15 miles east.  I haven't heard if the winds will pick up later.  My lily leaves received a light dusting of ash that settled on them after the winds quit blowing last night....

Yikes Mike - nasty. I could smell smoke all night. Got up a few times and looked at each horizon to make sure there was no big orange glow.
As you say, fairly quiet this am - but have just finished hosing down the entire garden. Not nearly as bad as yours, but still stuff everywhere.
I want to say I remember reading that hosing ash off a cars' surface was bad for the paint - I forget the details - anyone know about this?

Cheers,

Mike

Today we are getting the fall out. 1pm sun, which should normally be bright and warm, against a clear blue sky, is grey and fuzzy. Compared to losing ones home, this is chicken feed, but is kind of scary at the same time.

I am supposed to deal with earthquakes, illegals, gangs, traffic, and self centered Hollywood celebs, but this is interfering with my garden!

Cheers,

Mike

Very scary stuff these fires.  So far I only see the black smoke clouds north of me but luckily no ashes...yet.  Winds seem to be blowing westward.  Thank goodness.

I just found out about the "no outdoor fireplaces lit during red flag days law" when the conditions are ripe for fire.  I need to make sure my neighbors know about this necessary rule.  Too scary watching fire whipped by winds race through communities!

Glad to know you're alright, guys!

I watched some footage on the news and was amazed at the winds....seems hard enough for the firefighters to fight a blaze and then to have to stand up to those strong winds, it must be very exhausting for them.  It is a horrible sight and my heart goes out to all those who have lost so much.  I hope all of you stay safe.
Mikey, what an awful mess, can you skim it off the pond?  is the ash bad for the pond in small quanities?

No skimming was needed.  I have crystal clear water today!   I hosed the patio and lots of black dust came off. The chairs too were covered.  Now we need a good rain!

This Santa Barbara fire burned an area I once lived in, and I lived there during the last huge fire in the 1970s.  Of course, everything is built up a LOT more now with bazillion dollar mc mansions and all. It was pretty isolated then.  Still, it brought back a lot of memories watching the video clips.  Fires in the fall with Santa Ana winds are an incredibly powerful show of force by Mom Nature.  I remember standing on a ridge watching the fire approach several ridges away.  It was maybe a mile or two away by air.  The ridge next to us just exploded in flames, about 5 seconds later, the one I was on did the same.  The fire and the heat just ignite the ridges without burning anything in between, then the fire sweeps through the canyons.  A friend was in one of the canyons on a tractor clearing and the fire leaped over him from one ridge to the next, he got under the tractor and it swooped down and up the hill and burned the seat off the tractor but he was ok.  The main danger then is that it uses all of the oxygen and you can suffocate.   It moves so fast and jumps such great distances.  Horrible and beautiful and terrifying - an experience I'll never forget.

Jonna, I built a home off of Foothill on Santa Terracita.  I have no idea how it did.
I often regret selling it, but then again who knows?

My mom was living off Foothill,  Jerry, when she died, that was many years ago though.  Where I was watching was up on Mountain Drive, off Coyote Road.   They will rebuild them all, it's like rebuilding after a hurricane or an earthquake.  I just think that they should require the kind of block and concrete buildings that won't burn, although in that kind of heat everything inside will flash to a crisp.  The house I lived in up there was adobe, we actually made the adobe bricks on the site.  Well, I didn't, I watched mostly.  We had a generator and a pump in the pool and kept the area around the house and the roof wet and the house survived.  It was one of those young and stupid things to stay there against the evacuation order but in my case anyway, it worked out.  I sure wouldn't do it now.  Funny how as you get older you lose that immortal feeling and get a lot more serious about your safety.
