Pop Up Insanity
« on: November 22, 2008, 08:27:46 AM »
Pop Up Hell!

I did install Spy Bot and it seems to be working.  It seemed to take a while to kick in (make sense?)  "Classmates", "Direct TV" and "Meet Girls" were popping up so rapidly I could not write a letter!

Do these guys think this endears us to them?  I am with Classmates but if I can talk to a human I will drop them because of this awful and time consuming intrusion.

Have any of you had similar problems?

I have some sort of pop-up blocker so I rarely get any of those.  But I hear you about the idiocy of some of these ads.  I mean, take the spam emails for Viagra, Cialis, et al.

They send out the emails and a vast majority of the population writes rules: delete emails with Viagra, Cialis, etc.  The spammers know this, so they start spelling it V1agr@, Cial1s....do these idiots think that just because they found a way around our message rules that we are impressed...and NOW we will buy from them???

The very sad part of all this is that it must be working because if it didn't they wouldn't have any need to spam us.  So there are people out there who are apparently buying from those ads.   >:(-
I'm broke and can't afford to pay attention, so you might have to lend me an ear.

Spybot seems to be doing the job Michael, except for "Classmates" that presists.
It took me a few minutes to sign my name to a email the interruptions were so fast and furious.

I am good now with the exception of the "Classmates" pop up.  I am a member. Would unsubscribing make a difference?

It is worth a shot. Maybe upon signing up you agreed to receive these popups in the fine print. I would unsubscribe. I would then delete your cookies. I normally manually delete my cookies and browsing history once or twice a week. Mcaffee takes care of these problems but I help it out along the way.

I use Firefox with the Ad Block Plus add on.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

No pop ups. Not even on Classmates.com

I doubt that it would help...it's an ad and doesn't pay attention to who is subscribed or not.  When I go to Snopes.com, the ony thing that seems to pop up is classmates.com...and I've never subscribed.

You may want to see if you have a program running in the background that's responsible for the ads.  That seems like more than 'normal'.  I had a ?virus? that did that.... pop up hell is right!

I now downloaded  Ad-Aware SE personal edition, so far so good.
There was an article on Google that made it sound right.

Jerry-
I use Ad-Aware and SpyBot...as well as having a corporate level McAfee Virus protection.  The only thing I don't have is an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!

...but I'd probably put someone's eye out with that thing...

I have used Ad Aware and Spy Bot Search and Destroy for years. I also use Spyware Blaster, which doesn't allow spyware to install in the first place. They are all free.

http://www.lavasoft.com/

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

The key to all of these is to run updates at least weekly. Free versions likely mean you need to update manually.

I have also seen Super Anti Spyware recommended a lot on the Computer Help Forum at That Home Site (Garden Web)
http://www.superantispyware.com/

You should also check under Add/Remove programs and see how many versions of Java you have. You should only have the newest one. Old ones can be security risks.

This free program will automatically keep your Java up to date:
