Cooper's Hawk?
« on: January 06, 2009, 10:53:02 AM »
I snapped this photo yesterday morning when I let the dogs out to potty.  Actually it sat there the whole time they were out doing their business and I waited until they were back inside before I went and got the camera.  From the pictures I've seen online, it appears to be a juvenile Cooper's hawk.  Can anyone confirm or properly ID this hawk?

I didn't want to leave the dogs out with this around, especially my soon to be 17 year old Cocker Spaniel that is deaf.  I could see this thing attacking her.  Funny thing is the two younger dogs barked a few times, but didn't scare the hawk away.  I don't think they noticed the hawk, just barked at something else.  What did finally scare the bird away was the shutter sound from my camera.

Thanks,

Gorgeous bird, only wish I knew the name.  Looks like a young ones as you mentioned.  Thanks for sharing this wonderful find.  Lucky you.

Could be a Cooper. But a Cooper isn't large enought to carry away a cocker spaniel.

Sharp shinned and Cooper's are hard to tell apart but I would not worry about the dogs with either one around. These hawks prey on mice and sparrows.
