Asian Market Finds....
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:34:07 PM »
Drove up to Stony Brook for my MD checkup today, stopped and saw LIjohn, his new salt water fish and coral (but Bunnie was hiding), had an awesome cup of coffee and cake, saw the kitties, the baby peacocks, the whole menagerie!
Then we went to my MD, then stopped at the Asaian Market.
It's almost the Chinese New Year (Jan. 26th, Year Of The Ox) so the Asian Markets have 'New Year traditional foods are in.
Here are some I found...

Yummy Dried Lotus Seed....sort of like pistachios. Needs salt.

Candied Sliced Lotus Roots

Not very nutritional...

Closeup of sliced root...

This is REALLY delicious, very sweet, texture and taste like dried pineapple, not as tart.

Bought a whole bunch of other interesting stuff too.
Then we went to Macys and got FREE cosmetics. Then we went to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner, then went to Trader Joes, then home.
Now I am pooped, watching Ghost Hunters, then going to bed. Feel like I'm coming down with a head cold so having some of my new ginger and hibiscus tea I bought at the Asian Market.  8)
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Wow Joyce, sure sounds like you had fun making the rounds of interesting places. I don't know anything about the Asian markets and what they sell but I like trying new things and trying different stuff.

I'm going to Los Angeles Friday to do major purchase of Asian goods for Chinese New Year - Monday.   @O@  Love checking out all the goods and fresh seafood and veges.  Gonna be cooking up a storm all weekend  :D

Joyce, that's the first time I've heard of eating the dried lotus seeds like nuts.  Usually I soak (rehydrate) them and add them to soups and other hot dishes.  But I will give your method a try!

the cheesecake factory is overpriced for what you get.  but....their cheesecake alone is worth the visit.  what kind of cheesecake did you get, joyce?  you can't make a trip to the cheesecake factory and not get cheesecake.  i think my favorite is german chocolate.  that asian stuff looks very interesting.  i bet that just browsing the market was as much fun as getting the food.

That's the trouble with being stuck in the middle of nowhere, no interesting markets like you just visited  >:(-  I love browsing markets, any kind--and shopping--well, I looooove doing that!

Joyce, the goodies you bought are specialties for Chinese New Year (this year it is 1/26).  The candied lotus roots are really sweet.  The lotus seeds we use to cook dessert with.  I have bought a bunch of them myself because we are celebrating CNY this weekend.   O0

We have a new market in the neighborhood.  It is "Seafood City."  Turns out my son and his GF were very aware of it.  It is a Philippine market.  Good prices and many unique products.
Lots of fresh seafood too.  Fresh Tilapia being one.  Special produce too.
They have one in OC so i bet Anette has been there

 Haven't heard of it but will look it up if it's in the neighborhood  O0
I'm deciding whether to go to Monterey Park or San Gabriel for my shopping tomorrow.  It'll be an hours drive - without traffic  :P  Also I want to do some sight seeing (and dim-sum  ::) ) first before hitting the markets for fresh foods.

I have never heard of eating lotus seeds raw either, they also have candied lotus seeds during CNY and its not overly sweet like lotus roots. Try them, you will like it.
