Question about grass around pond.
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:21:33 AM »
Just wondered about something...for those of you that have grass around your pond.  How do you keep the grass from getting all in the pond when you mow (or use weedeater)?  I am thinking of putting grass around mine, but can't get past that question...thanks! :-\

I mow with my brush hog and it blows to the side so if I mow the right direction it blows the grass away from the water.        Mike.

I'm afraid that the mower the guys use is too big to fit the space.  I think they would use a weedeater.  This may not be a good idea?

If you are not actually doing the mowing you might want to install an edging. A commercial outfit will not think to keep the grass out of your pond.
Might want to create a planting area buffer for the esge of your pond that needs mowing.

When I had grass, I aimed the mower so it blew the clippings in the opposite direction.  Another idea is to do the area nearest your pond by hand clippers.

One reason why my pond is now flanked by flagstone.

You could always do it in artificial turf. I've heard of somebody doing that but can't remember who.
Happy ponding,

If you think that your question is dumb, imagine how totally stupid you will look if you don't ask it.

Well, I couldn't keep the grass out.  Even with the mower discharge pointing away from the pond, there was always some grass lofted back onto the water.  But I could reach anywhere on the surface with a long-handled screen net, so I just skimmed it off later.  In total it probably was more work than putting in some edging slate.

 {:-P;; I just blow it the other way or catch it in my push mower bagger. If a little gets in the water I just scoop it out with a skimmer.
I thought that I was wrong once,But I was mistaken. hehehehehe

DH always gets it in the ponds even though the grass is four feet away from them.  {nono}
