Hey Sean - Scarlet Bells Bloom etc.
« on: March 16, 2009, 09:05:02 AM »
Here are a few pics of my Scarlet Bells.
I have not grown these before. The older growth from last year is brown at the tops.
New growth is coming up as you can see in the 3rd photo.
Should I cut the older parts to let the energy go into the new portions or leave it alone to die off on it's own?

With the hardy pitchers, let it die off naturally as the plant reabsorbs the nutrients. You can cut away any crispy brown areas but not anythign that is still greenish or yellowing. As they do not absorb nutrients from the root zone, cutting away too much green matter could kill the whole plant.

Cheers,
Sean

Hi Tim,
Is that Crown of Thorns growing behind your Scarlet Bells?

Yes, I have 2 different ones. That one is about 4 years old I think. About 2.5' tall.

Wow!  Beautiful pitcher flower!  Thanks for asking the question and thanks Sean for the answer!  Hoping for a bloom on my nameless pitcher this season.
