Late Tomatoes
« on: February 06, 2009, 06:12:02 PM »
I got a hankering for a BLT.  I knew I had bread, lettuce and bacon but was unsure if I had a tomato.  None in the fridge....  :(   I had some green tomatoes growing in the garden a month or two back from which I made fried green tomatoes.  Having nothing to lose I checked the tomato bush.....  Bush?  Hah!  I looked up into the top of an arbor, about 9' high, and I saw what I was looking for.... tomatoes growing on a vine...

While in the area I noticed my saucer magnolia in bloom with the parrot's feather covered pond in the background...

Nothing better than home grown tomatoes!  Lucky you still have so many growing.  I picked the last heirloom tomato about 2 weeks ago and the plant has been chopped back.

I bought another cooler weather tomato called "Mortgage Lifter".  It was the only heirloom available at Rodger's Garden.  But why the name?!  I checked its origins out here

The tomato bush has lots of green growth still and I am tempted to cut it down to the ground and see how it produces in its second year.  Just before Christmas we took the Amtrak Coast Starlight north to Portland.  While traveling through Camarillo (south of Santa Barbara) I was amazed to see workers still picking strawberries.

But they are not like summer tomatoes and besides, just a few. Only good for bragging rights.
