Very pretty Datura. I like them too, but haven't grown them for a few years now. Really like the colour.

That is really pretty.  It looks like the double angel trumbet I bought this year.

The botanical name is Datura which is the genus and the species is either metel or fastuosa depending on the source and the cultivar is 'Double Purple'.

Angel's Trumpet and Moonflower are both common names and vary regionally. Moonflower is generally used for a large white morning glory relative that blooms at night but I have seen it used for Daturas.   :D

Brugmansias are also called Angel's Trumpets. Their flowers point down.

All parts of this plant are poisonous! Brugs too.

I thought your Datura was gorgeous.  I did not know they came in a purple.  I had grown the large white version of the morning glory that blooms in the evening.  I also had a very old fashion one that was very small that someone gave me.  It had a beautiful bright yellow color to it.  Each night you could tell which one of the blooms were going to open and just as dusk was beginning to descend, I would stand at my flower beds and each all these little flowers open right in front of my eyes.  That bloom only lated that evening and come morning it was limp and spent on the plant.  I left it lay there as it had a seed inside it and that is how I got new plants to grow.  But following one really severe cold winter, only a couple of my plants returned and then they finally died off and I never found any ones like that small one ever again.  I don't know what it's real name was, maybe someone on here can tell me.  I grew the large ones after that but they just weren't the same.  Your plant was just beautiful and I will have to give it thought for next spring.  Is it a perennial?

Bonnie, that Double Purple Datura is gorgeous!!!   o(:-) o(:-) o(:-)

I've wanted to try them before, but I have so many small grandchildren around here...plus the stupid dogs that will eat almost anything...that I was afraid to plant them.   :(

They are a really cool plant. The purple is really pretty.
These plants are illegal here within the city limits. You see a few around but not many. If the plant is in plain view you can be asked to destroy it or it will be destroyed for you.
A tea can be made with the seed pods that can give you quite a trip. Its a hallucinogen and used as a recreational drug by teens. It became such a problem around here that the city banned them and the county frowns on them. So be careful with them. :)

Bonnie:  I am just fascinated with this purple moon flower.  Do you think you will have seeds from this plant that I might get from you for next years growing season?  Is it a perrennial?  The moon flowers I always grew came back each year.  I have been trying to plant nothing but perrennials in my flower gardens for the last couple of years.  It certainly cuts down on the expense each spring.  We have a bed and breakfast here and the guests love our flowers, pool and waterfalls but it is a lot of work to water and feed plants and pull weeds all summer.  I have some nice areas that the Datura would look nice in.  Thanks again for the picture.  It is a beautiful flower.
