Got a few new  little koi from a coworker of DH's a couple weeks ago, they only have a preform and each year they get new fish. They take them to a dealer and return them and get a voucher for new ones in the spring, this year they could not find a dealer that was willing to do it, and she said if I didn't want them they would end up on the compost pile, for her it's just a summer hobby. Well being late in the season and not wanting to subject our fish to possibly new cooties thought I'd  of course first try a good QT even though late in the season, had a hard time keeping quality and some showed signs of maybe pox, the outside temps for the above ground preform I was using began to swing a little to much from day/night temps for my liking so I decided to put them in the lily pond for the winter, the water temp and quality is much better then my small 60gal preform. So here is a picture, nothing special but I couldn't see them composted. DH likes the Shushui (me too), and the little red/black (may be a Kujaku) hope they do well for the winter, come spring if no pox signs, will possibly put them in the main pond and put goldfish in the lilypond.

  That's the first time I've heard of this way of wintering koi ;D

You have some very pretty koi there.  I hope they winter better with you!

Nice koi. I especially llike the yellow one. I had a yellow and white koi who turned colors and is now orange and yellow. Hope you have better luck than me. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for looking, I'm glad they are here, had to take them could see them as compost.  As of now the yellow is the bravest and most freindly, the Shusui, and the darker speckeld one can only be seen at night, don't know where they hide all day, actually thought maybe a heron had got them yesterday when I couldn't find them, but they showed up at night.

miguynmkoi, we have two pond/fish dealers in the area, both have done this in the past, but now they have stopped, she may have been able to give them for credit to a pet store, but then would have to purchase new next year.  She said the koi are to messy to keep in a 10gal aquarium so next year she may try goldfish.  I hope so because her preform is really to small to keep koi longterm, and I will be overstocked if I keep taking them.

Barb the blue one is a Shusui, it has the scales of a doitsu, only on the back ridge and shoulders.  I'm interested in seeing how the dark speckeld one towards the top turns out, it has blue, black, white and yellow there is also underlying red/orange.

mcp, I think it's interesting how they can change their color so, it has happened to a couple of mine also
