What kind of flower is this?
« on: May 09, 2009, 04:17:24 AM »
I was emptying out some big pots that we used last year and found two large bulbs, my wife planted them and this is coming up. Can anyone tell me what it is?

It's sure pretty, it has another flower unfurling that looks like it's going to have a purple edge. We are leaving for College Station for a week tomorrow and won't be here when it blooms. I hope it is still there when we get back. The National Fire Prevention Association mandates that all industrial firefighters log a certain amount of hours every year fighting pressurized liquid fuel fires. I love it and my wife gets a week of pool time. Free food, lodging and beer on the company nickel, can't be beat.  @O@

I probably won't bring my laptop because we have such different sleep patterns. I wake up at 04:30 A.M. like an alarm clock is inside of my head, she sleeps in. If I bring the laptop I will have to turn the light on. I'll use that early time to work out before fire school.

Thanks for the flower Id.

It is a Calla,  which isn't a lily at all or even related.  :D  likely a hybrid variety of Zantedeschia elliottiana

Some Callas love wet feet. Others do not. Zantedeschia aethiopica, the big white ones do. The native Calla palustris does as well.

Zantedeschia rehmannii and hybrids of it (the pink, yellow and lavender ones often seen as florist potted gift plants) will rot if they are wet in winter.
