Lotus leaves coming up "red"
« on: April 10, 2010, 06:39:27 AM »
Need your experience please.
My Lotus Nelumbo Nucifera, last year from seed, had aerial leaves before dormancy. Now they start sending up small leaves but they are red and wrinkled. Have all my pots with the same. Is this normal?
Temperatures at night are around 50F zone 9, can it be too cold for them?
Thanks for any advices.

I think they're just baby leaves.  They'll probably fill out as the plant matures, like butterfly wings do.  Or subsequent leaves will be more robust, as the plant get stronger and the weather gets warmer.

Mine are doing th same thing as are my green hardy lily pads. It's just cooler water and breaking dormancy. When they start sending more up as it warms it'll be back to normal

Thanks Julles and Rad. I was worried because, as you know, the very first leaves came out from the seeds were green and this is my first experience of the coming out of dormancy. Now ? can relax and wait for the warmer days. Thanks again.

I'm glad you brought up this topic, Tugo.  My new lotus (all 6 of them  o(:-) ) from Tinkster are doing exactly the same thing.  Red, small, and wrinkly.  That was a couple of weeks ago.  Today they are still reddish with a bit of green, larger, and smooth.   @O@ I'm excited this is the best results I've had with lotus!

Actually, as Rad mentioned, my hardy w.lilies ( I have them since 3 years ) always do the same. Start with  red leaves and later comes the green ones. But when Lotus was something new for me and since even the first leaves came out from the seeds were green (before dormancy) my mind couldn't make a bridge between them and I was worrying. Thanks to the friends with experience.

Thanks a lot. After the view of so many experts my lotus has no other chance than being a good girl and grow
pretty, of course with future good care. Hope to post grown up photos next time.
