2 clocks We just made
« on: October 29, 2006, 11:49:26 AM »
This is the first, a shaker clock from quarter-sawn white oak.

This is one I just finished painting this morning, the back splash is mirror that is why
you see double. The ships clock we've had forever, I got my imagination going and
came up with this. I have another clock that I designed, that is going to
incorporate my Sworvki  (sp?) crystal mouse, after we finish that one, we're going
to make a koi clock.

They are both very cool!  I really love the elegant look of the wall clock and DD has started a pig collection, so she likes the pig one.  She says you should make it a flying pig!

Thanks Teresa, Sean and Lawanna.
Esther, the next one will be bigger wider and have a mouse hole
instead of a round hole for showing the pendulum The mouse will
be peeking outside the mouse hole, and since the mouse is crystal
it will pick up the reflections of the moving pendulum. I also
bought a bigger clock face 6" round (the first one is 4")
Here is a mock up of a pattern I drew. I taped it onto
the other clock. Since I took this photo a few days ago, I have already widened
the clock body somewhat. We have to go back to the mill and get more
quarter-sawn white oak.
The mouse I drew is about the same size as the crystal mouse.
Sean, clocks fascinate me as well...

Hi Joann,

I don't want to hijack your thread but here is a cuckoo clock I paid $75.00 for on eBay. It was in major disrepair. I am still working on it but it does keep time now, I just have some of the gingerbread to replace that is still missing.
Before and after photo's

Thanks Mikey, The pig clock was easy. For weeks (and I mean weeks) I was working on a design for stained glass for
a cabinet we made for the breakfast room. It was hummingbirds and morning glories.
As we were setting up and picking out the glass, the head cabinetmaker said, "Joann make pigs instead
that pig dish is so cute"...in about an hour, I had the pigs drawn and the pattern cut out...
It took us 12 hours to cut the glass, foil and solder these windows, and we are delighted with the finished product...
The backs plash again is mirror, the cabinet has the illusion of hanging from the ceiling, but it's not.

Here is a close-up ...I call it "Pigs on the grassy knoll"

OMG Sean,  that is a beauty. You did a great job on it...Is that the same clock? The love the animals coming down the sides.
We have downstairs in our workshop Cliff's Grandfathers cookoo. It is sooo big, I really don't have enough wall space in our den to hang it. We already have two clocks in there and plan on putting the koi clock in the den when we make it.

Love the clocks. You are very talented indeed. And your stained glass in beautiful.
Did you make the cabinets too. They look great!
Are the pitchers made of wood also?
Sean, that is a very cool clock.

Joann, your clocks, stained glass, and kitchen cabinets are amazing. I'm so glad you posted pictures of the cabinets. When you said you were remodeling your kitchen, I was wondering how you possibly could make your home any prettier than it already is. But you did!

Sean, excellent job on the Cuckoo clock. That's a real beauty.
I have a question for you. How do you fix one that has had the chain ripped out?

My hubby had one that was given to him by his Mom before she died. We had finally decided that our 4 yo boy was old enough to leave it alone, and hung it on the kitchen wall. The very next day a child yanked on the chains so hard that they were in pieces on the floor. Kevin was so upset, as he had just cleaned it and got it working for all of us to enjoy. We don't know who did it, there were neighbor kids in our kitchen at the time, and it happened so fast. Nobody fessed up.
Kevin packed it away broken, because he was so upset.

I would LOVE to fix it for him.  :'( o(:-)

Thanks Joyce, Fishlips, Karen, and Teresa again   :)

When we were at the woodworking supply store about 1 1/2 weeks ago, buying clock parts for the mouse clock
we're gonna make, I spotted this 8" clock face in a discount bin for 6.00 dollars. Now I kept tossing
it back and forth thinking what could we do with a clock face that big?

I bought it thinking, I'll think of something. So I was sitting at my drawing table re-working the mouse
clock design, when it hit me   (8:-) (Insert light bulb here)
I took off the cover and glass and hands and cut out a familiar face that was hanging over my drawing table...
This is what it looks like now, it's not the koi clock I was thinking of making--that will be in wood, none the
less is the cutest thing... @O@ I'm sure you'll will agree.... a koi clock in 15 minutes.  ;D
the squares on the chess board are 1 3/4" (for size reference)

Your Koi Clock is Wonderful Joann!

Karen, The chains need to be linked back together. To get them back on the track you need to know which way the chain pulls on the gears. There are two or three gears depending on whether your clock is musical or not and there are teeth inside the track of the gears. The first thing to do is tape the chains that are still set on the gears first so they do not slip off their gears. Then you can turn the clock upside down and feed the chain back down through the hole and align it over the gear until it catches on the teeth in the gear.
This is what the gear looks like

If you have a small screwdriver you can gently turn the gear till the chain loops over the gear and then pull it back through the other hole. Each chain should have a ring at the end to keep it from slipping through the hole when the chain has reached the end. Attach this last and your clock should be fixed.

Cheers,
Sean

Thank you. Viv Terri, Sean, Jerry and Fishlips again :)
Jerry, you have a good eye...we started out doing the kitchen in Shaker, and finished it it May, then put the cabinets
on hold that needed to be done for the breakfast room, so that we could enjoy the summer ponding season.
We got back into it on Sept 2nd. And made the 4 remaining cabinets for the breatkaft room, which I designed
leaning more towards the Arts and Crafts style. We started with the pig and wine cabinet, the bottom cabinet is for pots and pans in roll out drawers, and also a toaster oven that operated from inside the drawer. (the head cabinetmaker said that was my best idea, after the wine cabinet...the left side is for an under cabinet freezer cause my bottom freezer in our refigerator has a small freezer.
If you'll allow me another brag...These are the final two cabinets we built. The bottom cabinet is for cookbooks
potato's and onions abd the top cabinet was designed to hold a 23" flat screen tv. At the last minute I came up with the three door design, the doors on the left hinge together and the door on the right opens into the bay window about 3 1/2 inches.

freezer cabinet...there is a funny story that goes along with this cabinet...but I have to get ready to
take on the day.

The clocks are wonderful and I particularly like the shaker clock. The cabinets are gorgeous! You've done such a beautiful job. When in the world do you find the time to do all of this??? I've got pieces of antique furniture for almost 10 years now that I can never seem to get the time to put together and refinish.
