new potting bench
« on: October 28, 2006, 09:33:53 AM »
First thing this morning, I cleaned the kitchen. ?)(?
Then I turned it and the rest of the place a disaster. I did get a lot of plants replanted and potted though.
I had a very old fern that looked to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaay past tme to dump, but when I took it apart, I ended up keeping quite a buch of good looking rooted starts and repotting.
I also got a new fern and a couple other new plants, so got them potted up too.
Now I have the mess to clean up.

It's funny how much of a mess occurs when one is being creative.

Wow!  Guess it's a good thing you're divorced, cuz you'd be gettin' divorced quickly if a wife saw that mess!!!

You know, if I had made a mess like that, I wouldn't see my wife for three days. That's how long it would take for the swelling to go down. lol

Heck, I AM a wife and I make messes like that when I repot indoors. I usually try to wait for a warm enough day and repot on a card table in the garage, where I can sweep the mess out the driveway. But Santa promised to bring me my very own POTTING BENCH for Xmas. I'll still have to go outside to use it though.

Mine is a bit on the crude side, but so am I.   It s an old work bech with some cement board as table top. This is the stuff that is used under ceramic tile.  It is generous in size and I need that.
That's bamboo encroaching.

Scott, quite similar, but I think a bit smaller. I checked out every model online to find the right size and configuration. I wanted something shorter than 48" since it's going on a small patio outside a sliding glass door. I think it's about 35" long and 22" deep, if I remember correctly and if my husband the elf got it right!  ;D

Jerry, I have used crude ones in the past, including a 6' piece of 2" thick plastic that was 2' wide. I sat down one day and decided that I wanted a decent potting bench. I made the plans in my head and went and bought the lumber. We had to move after I bought the lumber and it was two years before I actually got to build it. I built it last year and it has been a big help. All I need now is to build a matching mixing box. I'm using an old plastic truck toolbox that I cut the top off of.

Sheila, mine is 6' long x 2' deep and the work surface (if I remember correctly) is 30" high to fit my height. As mentioned above, I built it myself. That was one of the woodworking projects that I used to keep me from going stir crazy in this cramped mobile home park. Presently, I'm working on a transport box for my truck. After that, there is a 3x5'x18"deep wood trough and a 4x10x2'deep wood trough. There may be another shallow wooden trough after that, depending on how much lumber is left over.

Scott

Here's my potting bench.....err.... tub.... (photo is courtesy of Lowes...)  I use one of those black vinyl cement mixing tubs......  I have a little milking stool I sit on when mixing up a batch.  I've considered building a potting bench but I have decided against it because my tub is portable and I take it to where the pots are located.

I just don't repot. Bob built me a potting bench years ago but kept it in the garage for tools.....My houseplants have been in the same pots for many years. Oh well, they don't seem to mind and I don't have very many anyway.

Mikey, that tub is what I use for a planter. The thing that I use holds three times as much soil.

I don't repot much, but the bench is a must for starting new plants and seeds.
