There be Nile Perch here!
« on: October 29, 2006, 05:17:00 PM »
I stopped by my favorite pond store yesterday. My intentions was to buy some Tilapia. Well, they were on sale. They were 50% off or half price. I was expecting to pay $2.50 each but only had to pay $1.25 each. I bought ten expecting to lose a few. I've only lost one so far. I don't expect many more since they are the largest fish in that trough right now and if they go over into the koi area, they are to big to be eaten by the koi. o(

Happy ponding,

When I end up with an acre pond full, then I will concider eating them. Right now, they are pets and are in with the rosey red minnows, mosquito fish, snails, and eel grass.

Trader Joe's sells Breaded Frozen Tilapia fillets, best tasting fish I have ever had including Mahimahi.
A fine food fish!

But aren't all Tilapia "farmed" nowadays? Somebody told me that, and I notice that I never find a label that says "wild caught" anymore.

Do they look pretty in the pond? I think Rosy reds are quite pretty.

They are hardy.  I am told they thrive in drainage ditches in Asia.

Farm raised ought to be good. I assume their diet is good stuff. O0

If these came from where I think they did, then they came from a 70x30x5'deep dirt bottom pond in this county. I met the woman that owned the pond at my club's plant festival. These are not for eating! Tilapia's main source of food is algae. In a lined pond, they can't be seen. Mine have migrated now. They took the plunge down stream to be with the koi, goldfish, and shubunkins. If there isn't any algae, they will eat plants and, in one instance, eat smaller fish but they are primarily vegatarians.
