I'm soooo excited about my new fishies-I was thinking about getting some wakin, but when I saw these guys offered by Rain Garden Nursery in Hawaii-they fit my bill even more than wakin. They are hardy, outdoor-pond goldies with a fantail that is held rather stiffly out from the body, and should be about as wide as the fish is long. They do have a peduncle flash, although I think not as prominent as a wakin. They survived the trip from Hawaii to Va very well, adn within an hour of arriving at their new home, they were cruising around with the big guys and nibbling at food pellets. About 10 days later, they are now coming up to my hand, although they won't take food from my fingers yet, like the older fellahs. They are still small-the biggest less than 5 inches- and quick, so hard to photograph, and these pics don't do them justice.

Kat, those are some fine-looking fishies. I can't wait til my little guys are big enough to really flaunt their colors. How fast do they grow? I have one koi who is now 3 years old and two other goldies - a comet and a fantail -who are either 5 or 6, I can't remember. And they are SOOOOO pretty. I love my comet's long swishy tail.

I got most of mine last year & a few more this spring, so not sure how quickly they do grow.  The ones I got from Steve last year have been spawning this spring if that'll give you an idea of the growth rate.  I'd say they grow about the same rate as regular comets, sarassa, shubunkins, etc.  Mine are in a 750 gallon pond, so that probably helped them grow faster.  You'll really love their tails.

Missy, they sure are pretty.  Good thing they're fast, as that will help them escape 'coons and birds.

Kat, I'm going to remember that, when I come up to Dallas in October for the State Fair.  Wouldn't mind bringing a few of those fishies home afterwards.

Brenda--I don't have any watonai right now but might have a handful of wakin from last year's spawn that I still need to catch--I sold most of my extras already on Craigslist. 

Julles--All my lily ponds are full of fry from spring spawning, so I should have some available by this fall.

There are a couple wakin in my pic, so you can compare the tail length.  Sorry the picture isn't better but it is hard to get good pics because of all the glare/reflections.  Personally I don't know why wakins are the prefered fish.  They are cute but I LOVE the long tails of the watonai as they appear to be a lot more balanced.  They get about 12" at mature size.

Very niceeeee...  O0  I got some really nice wakins from Tracey last year.  DH has been watching the babies to see if there are any wakins or mutt from them.   ;D

Kat - I'm going to Dallas in June or July to see my sister and her new baby (actually she lives in Plano).  May be I'll stop by to see your beautiful waterlilies and fish??  DH wants to take my mom and kids to St. Antonio Sea World as well.

Kids are mess makers in themselves but when you've got PACKRAT problems & don't like to clean to begin with, I could be an excellent candidate for "Clean House".  The problem is they would not be able to pry much away from me for a garage sale  ::) ::) ::)

Back to the watonai---they are definitely beautiful fish & mine come to me every time they hear the door open by their pond.  I keep nets over their pond, so I don't have them trained to eat from my hand.

WOW those are beautiful!!! hmmmmmm watonai, now there is a fish DH would love...he would like to get rid of all the short-tailed goldfish and just have the long tails, we have lots with inbetween tails now, but he really loves the long tails.
