You won't believe this !
« on: August 10, 2009, 08:32:36 AM »
This is the kind of thing that I see and usually only get to tell people about, but now I can show all of you thanks to my camera.
I don't know how pond related this is but it is a water snake and a Japanese trapdoor snail from my pond.

   Who's got who ???

What the hell I'll add a Haunting Beauty pic too.

So how did that story end? Do you think the snake was trying to get the snail out of the shell?

I Dont know Esther. I Left them to figure it out on there own and left them on the shore where I found them.  Snakes breath through a hole under their tongue so the snake was able to breath and was alive and healthy when I left them.

Here's my who got who photo...

The Robins beak was impaled into the roof of the frog mouth and up into it's brain. Both died.

Yeah Joice I thought of your bird and frog pic when I posted these pics.  I guess your frog got speared by the bird at the moment of impact then the bird couldn't extricate it's self before it drowned. Or it broke it's neck when the frog hit it.
I wonder if the robin was flying when the frog hit it.
Well we know one thing, a water snake will at least TRY to eat a snail.  Well one time anyway.
I figure that the snakes hook shaped teeth couldn't release from the snail when it closed it's trap door on it's upper jaw. so they were both stuck. The snail won't release the snake because the snakes teeth make the snail withdraw into it's shell as a defence and as long as those teeth are sunk in the snail isn't going to open up to allow another bite.

Wow!  Once I saw a small garter snake attack a leopard frog by my pond, but the frog was way too big for him.  Suddenly they were rolling and rolling, then the frog got away.  It happened so fast I almost couldn't believe it really happened.
