Jerry,

I think that's what happened to the lotus I got from Tinkster.  It started out doing real well and now the leaves are all brown and really little.  I've been tempted to try to drag the barrel to a shady area.  I found a couple small lotus tubers in a pot that wasn't doing much (over taken by cannas, etc.,) and emptied it and repotted them, they look a lot better, they get more shade, but they still have not gotten any buds.  Wish I too, knew what the problem was, only fertilized them each with osmocote when I transplanted them, thought that would last for at least three months or so.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Jerry, if you do cut them off, cut the stems above the water line by a couple of inches. How big is the pot they are in? I do not think they are dying because of the heat.

I have had success in the past with those pots. They are oil change containers.
They are under 30% shade fabric.  This was the first disaster.

I know Joyce likes a bigger container.  I will seek same mext season.

I would guess that the pot is not big enough, especially if you do not replant each year. Lotus need room to "stretch" out their roots, and they need lots of fertilizer. If you had fertilized them too heavily just prior to their dying back, you would know that. If the plant is crowded in the pot, there are probably some living tubers still there. Cutting the stems off above the water line keeps the plant from "drowning." You do not want water going down the stems into the tuber. Let the plant sit until it has gone dormant, and then next spring repot any living tubers. INHO

will do.
I will put them in a relatively obscure corner of the pond. and place some water lilies in their old spot.

Thanks!
