Odd bug, kind of pretty.
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:14:06 AM »
This is the second one of these that I've seen in the yard but the first time I've seen one in the pond.   The colors are amazing, his back looks like it is made of turquoise.

Anyone know what it is?

I agree with Joyce...a stink bug.  They are like skunks.  Won't do anything to you unless you aggravate them and then watch out.  These bugs really do smell bad.  I learned as a kid not to mess with them  :P

Hey you guys in Mexico I found this out about stink bugs:

In Mexico Stink Bugs are eaten both live and cooked (for instance in a pate or salsa) since their pungent odor gives a dish an aromatic flavor  :D. So at your next partay you can serve this lovely delicacy  @O@.

What??? Yuck!  That's one delicacy that I've missed.  I wonder where in the country they eat them?  I hope not around here.  They do eat some stuff I wouldn't eat in different parts of the country but mainly in Oaxaca.  They love their fried grasshoppers over there.  Bleh! I've seen them in mounds at the markets and watched people happily stuffing them into their mouths from paper bags, not this camper.  They are also the ones who eat the worms in the Mescal and some other larvae stuff.

I'm a big food wimp.  I won't eat anything that is looking at me (still has its head and eyes), anything that could climb an aquarium wall (like an oyster), any spare parts of mammals (only muscle meat thank you no liver, stomach or other spare parts), any insect AT ALL, and since my years of diving there are fewer and fewer sea creatures that I'll eat.  I had to give up lobster after watching one too many of them bounce off rock walls like the cockroaches that they are.  I am careful never to look too closely at shrimp when diving because I do still like to eat them.

I'd try it. I actually have the opposite perspective as Jonna. Because I love lobster, I figure there may well be some insects worth eating being as they are arthropods too. The other day I was trying to find information on Asellus aquaticus which is something like an aquatic wood louse and I came across a picture of its deep sea cousin Bathynomeus giganteus. Do a google image search for it and you'll either be disgusted or think as I did "I bet that tastes like lobster  8-)~".

Oh yeah, Aquaphy, it's definitely related to lobster.  Scavenges dead stuff off the bottom and cleans up debris.  I was reading wiki and it seems they first found them off this peninsula in the deep part of the Gulf somewhere.  I'm sure they would be on the menu if there were enough of them.  Apparently they eat them in Taiwan.

Yuck.  No bugs for me.

I love all seafood and we used to go crabbing all the time and bring back lots of it to cook and dip in melted butter. When we lived in Forks we used to go smelting at the ocean using nets on a pole. You just eat them guts and all. I do not eat the bugs tho...................to gucky looking for me  :o. My DH and I sometimes watch those shows where those guys travel and eat everything the natives eat and sometimes it is so disgusting I have to look away

Aquaphy, I love lobster also but have you ever ate the bugs of any kind? If so which ones and what do they taste like? If not let me know when you do :DI. Guess if I were out somewhere lost in the woods I may have to consider it of course but for now I'll stick to the normal stuff. That Bathynomeus giganteus sure sounds good tho 8-)~.

Here is where they supposedly eat the lovely stink bugs:

Stink Bug Salsa: Every year, people living near Taxco, Mexico, catch stink bugs to make a special treat. First, the bugs are toasted to get rid of their stinky smell. Next they're ground up and put into salsa, a spicy sauce. (The stink bugs taste like sesame seeds.) Then the people grab their tostados (corn chips), spread them with salsa, and chow down.

People in Mexico sometimes use the eggs of water bugs in making tamales and tortillas. And sometimes they make them into little cakes.

Julieta Ramos-Elorduy is a scientist who studies the different ways that people in Mexico find, fix, and eat insects. She also likes to make up recipes using insects, like the pizza and spaghetti dish. Doesn't the spaghetti look suspicious, er, delicious? Those little brown things in the middle are mealworms (beetle larvae).

That's a pretty stink bug, the ones around here look like that but are a bright green or brown.  The intense color would be a tip off on the intense smell too I'll bet!

I've still got goose bumps thinking about Joyce's stink bug treat..... :P

And like jw, I love all seafood and don't care what it looks like or what it's been doing all it's life.   lol

Luckily, Taxco is a long ways from here.  It's up in the highlands, a town famous for its silver work, jewelry and other stuff.  I've been there but missed the stink bug salsa.   {nono}

The only stink bugs I've known are from California and they are solid black and have a different shape, their butts are higher than their front if you know what I mean.  They walk like a raccoon.  So, this one did not look at all familiar to me.  If I see another one, I'll poke it a bit and see if it stinks up the place  :P

The stinkbugs here are all black. I wouldn't think to eat one, but if there is a method to prepare them that makes them taste like sesame seeds, I would give it a try.

jw, I ate a lot of grasshoppers when I was preschool age living in MO. My dad showed me which ones were good eating and how to prepare them- remove the abdomens, discard the rest and eat them raw. I remember thinking they tasted like pumpkin seeds, which I like a lot so I would catch them and eat them when ever I saw them. I spent a couple years there as a kid and I haven't eaten any since because I'm not sure of the edibility of the ones we have here in OR which are different.

I was fortunate enough to attend the 07 IWGS meeting in Bangkok where I ate as much local food as I could. I didn't happen on anything too strange in the way of food, but I did have to get used to the way they often serve shrimp cooked whole in dishes. After realizing all the parts have the same great taste I became comfortable with eating them that way.

Howell, you hate those towns because you are not a SHOPPER!!!!   I love them!  Taxco is a silver jewelry dream, plus it is a beautiful mountain town with cobblestone streets and lots of hills.  It is so full of silver made into so many different things I think the whole town would shine if you put a light on it.   lol

JW, that's cool that you could see some of Merida.  It is a beautiful city, the old buildings and the indigenous markets and the color and music and food - all are wonderful.  I love it here.

Yeah, not that much into jewerly here.

I'm a shopper too, well I just do not like to go to small towns and go shopping I'd rather to go to a mall instead of a town or mercado. They are just too crowded for me..My mom and my dad travel to taxco and guadalaja and some of those south mexican places to go shopping too..
