Little tidbit I just leaned from the radio gardener
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:27:24 AM »
I did not know that lightning was good for your plants  :o. They say that rain water is better for your plants of course but I didn't know this one reason why. When it is lightning and raining during a thunderstorm the lightning charges the water w/ nitrogen and voila it feeds your plants  O0. Some of you I'm sure already knew this but I just thought I'd share for those who didn't  :). It was a show about collecting rain water in various ways by using rain barrels and underground systems that come up and make wonderful looking waterfalls and ponds. I can't really explain it but maybe I can show you from this site:

:D  I knew that rain water has nitrogen...but didn't know the lightening caused it.

Where does the nitrogen come from in the snow?   ::)

:D  I knew that rain water has nitrogen...but didn't know the lightening caused it.

Where does the nitrogen come from in the snow?   ::)

Here is what I found:

Well, it turns out not only snow, but rain as well, contains nitrogen compounds that were suspended in air as they formed. It is estimated that 2 to 12 pounds of nitrogen are deposited per acre as a result of snow and rain. Most of this nitrogen comes from emissions as a result of burning fossil fuels and industrial manufacturing. The rest comes from lightning fixing atmospheric nitrogen, which makes up 70 percent of air, as I recall.

In fact, it seems the amount of nitrogen in snow and rain has increased dramatically since industrialization and the advent of the automobile. One study I read indicated that by the 1980s the amount of nitrogen deposited in the Colorado Front Range was 30 times greater than it was before the Industrial Revolution. Another study says that this number has since doubled.

Granted, to a chemical gardener, 2 to 12 pounds per acre is not that much nitrogen when one considers the suggested rate of application is 3 to 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet. (An acre has 43,560 square feet). But in more and more areas, particularly along rivers and in watersheds, the nitrogen from rain and snow, particularly when snow melts in the spring, has been enough to cause serious changes in the ecosystem.

Add to this studies that show an increase in nitrogen mineralization -- uptake by microbes a la soil food web -- in tundra areas when there is snow cover and it becomes clear that snow falling in your yard can be counted for something, especially if you have not damaged your soil's microbes with harsh chemical fertilizers. No wonder the old wives' tales called snow "the poor farmer's fertilizer."

So curse it if you must, but know that there is some good from any snow that falls.

Yup, knew it. That's why all my houseplants and orchids go outside for the spring-summer-fall.
Once you start giving them fresh air, rain and required amounts of sunlight...and look how well they respond...
you'll never go back to keeping them inside all year.
After all, there is no plant on the face of this earth that calls a house it natural habitat.  ;)
There really is no such thing as a 'house'plant.

Snow has nitrogen because it's starts off as rain.  8)

And it's not just the nitrogen, it's all the airborn minerals and elements that come with the rain.
You should see how much my orchids grow in the summer outside, compared to how much they grow inside.
And the humidity outdoors is much more healthier for them too, because there's always air circulation.
This stimulates the epiphytic orchids to produce lots of roots, and when there's enough roots,
the orchid start growing new leaves, new offsets, and spikes!
It also simulates seasons, which many plants need in order to bloom.
That's why so many people ask me, 'How do you get your orchids to bloom so much?!'  :D

Well I better start putting all my houseplants outside next spring then if that's the case  :).
The one thing I worry about is bugs...........do you just spray them really good w/ a hose before bringing them back in I wonder?
