awww.... you guys are too nice about my Spanish. Here's what happened yesterday in my Spanish class, I got so frustrated that I walked out and went home. I just could not learn the rules for some of these verb tenses and I was so angry at myself that I just left. I know that when you are a native speaker you do not have to learn all the grammar rules but to learn a language as an adult you have to. I was completely tied up by the imperative tense changing forms in the negative and the familiar and the plural - my brain got warped.

Then when I got home, my cell phone stopped working and I had to go to the phone company to find out what happened. I asked for an English speaker because I was feeling so over my head with this new language. Of course, they said yes but when I got to the front of the line the guy I got said no, he didn't speak English. So, I started explaining the problem. I got that part fixed, got another problem with the voice mail fixed, got my maid a new phone because she had an accident on her bicycle and broke her other one, explained all of that even. At the end the guy told me my Spanish was "delicious". I'm not even sure if that was a compliment but it seemed like it was. I guess I will go back to my class on Thursday after all, I almost threw the book in the trash on my way out on Monday.

Now, if I were really ambitious I would write all of that in Spanish but I'm not so you'll have to use google.

Robie and Neo, either Friday or Saturday morning would be fine, Thursday I guess I will be in class. I need to buy some different pans for my lilies, I'll go to the plastic store tomorrow.

I feel mean now. I should have written that less colloquially at any rate, I'll bet it is almost unintelligible after google translates it. It is so hard sometimes to think in 2 languages. I so envy you Howell that you are young and bilingual, that is a great advantage.

Something about English and much and your telephone and speaking Spanish somebody's fault and a good reunion and the incident about the telephone and verbs, past and present tense?
It's fun to try and figure it out...........but I need mucho trubahar..........I think that means work?

jw, I have given up on ever being fluent but I would so like to be able to easily chat and while sometimes I can there is a lot that I miss and I get almost none of the subtleties of a conversation. that is really frustrating. I'm always pleased when I can just communicate but I hate not being able to imply things or make subtle jokes or get these things when they are said to me. I shouldn't complain, I do all right in day to day life but there is so much more. I'm angry that I did not use the opportunities that I had growing up in SoCal to learn this language thoroughly when I was young and it would have been so much easier.

What an opportunity we Americans have to raise our children bilingual and most of us waste it. It is the biggest gift we could give our kids and very few of us take advantage of it, including me. My son spent a semester in Spain and he can communicate in Spanish but I didn't push it and I should have. We are so far behind Europeans and other cultures - including here in Mexico where other languages are taught from grade school - that it is embarrassing. How can our kids compete in a global economy when they are unable to communicate and are considered unsophisticated and stupid by other cultures for this lack of language ability? It is a serious blind spot in the American view of the world, that idea that everyone should speak English. Many do, but you give up the advantage when you let others translate for you.

I love being bilingual...I sometimes dream in both languages...and that is confusing..

OK, I've got some questions. Does it take you a long time to log on to the other forum, to read all the posts or am I not understanding what you wrote at all? I guess this is a short spanish lesson but also I wonder about the differences between the 2 forums. I'm not good enough at reading spanish to be sure but there is a difference in the kind of chat right?

Yes, Jonna you got it right....

The thing about the chat is that I chat a whole lot more here than there because I have all of them or almost all of them added to my messenger account..so no need to go and chat at the forum but still sometimes log in and talk..

The leaf cutter ants have gotten to my lily pads and destroyed most of them. I went out there tonight with a flashlight and found them. Yesterday the pads were fine but today they are almost gone and there are small pieces floating in the water. The trail goes all around the pond and where the pads touch the edges they are getting on and then going from pad to pad throughout the pond. pinche zompopos

No, my accent is pura gringa. I keep saying that I sound like a 4 yo from the campo in Spanish. I'm hoping Robie will help me separate the final lily. I got some plastic cups today so I can put the babies in them like in Sean's tutorial. The others I've got in dog bowls and cut off juice bottles.

We could stand there and say "Gual Mar" in unison??? and with a Yuca accent it would be "booger Keem" not "keen", we change all final N's to M's - don't ya know?

Mimi's Spanish is pretty basic. She can understand common words and say a few things but she has resisted going to school and, don't tell her I said this, but it shows.

Do they really make the burger sound like booger...people in the north make the R sound in bur like boor and then the ger sounds like gur and it sounds like boorgur keen...
