My Lotus did not recover.
« on: September 18, 2009, 09:38:05 AM »
I had announced here that it had.  I saw rather chartreuse looking pads close by, but they turned out to by Lillie's.
The lotus were fried big time. :'(
A few very dry days with temps over 100 did it.  Some humidity as in the tropics would have made a difference

Please do not throw that pot out. Just leave it where it is until early spring.
I bet it just went dormant.
When you repot it next spring, remember...BIG pot. Like 24' wide and 10-12" deep.
I don't think it's the heat that did it in.
I think it ran out of soil and nutrients in that tiny pot and couldn't grow any more.

I wanted you to see the Post.  The pot turns out NOT to be an oil change container.  It is big, but not as grand as you recommend.  It is still very warm here.  Do you think I should leave them in water?  I do have a spare stock tank for just that!

Leave it potted & wait until next year.  Our friend let one of my lotus dry out while we were on vacation.  It took about a month or more to start growing again.  Yours may recover.

I'm with the others on it, don't throw it out.  Leave it and wait till next year to see what it does.

Jerry,
If you want to know for sure, depot the lotus, use a strong jet of water from your hose to wash off all dirt.  If the tubers are black and mushy, it's gone.  If they are firm and ivory white, they are alive.  Especially if there are "growing points" you have a good plant.  Whatever you do, protect  growing points from damage, break them and the lotus may not recover, so take care when depotting.  There is a better than even chance that Joyce is right and you should leave them in the water until late February or March and depot them then and repot with Osmocote in a larger pot.  One thing to consider: lotus prefer shallow water with 3 to 6 inches above the top of the pot.  If you decide to wait until spring, leave them in the pool where they are, and simply cut off any dead or dried out stems and leaves.

Are these lotus I sent you some years back?  If so, Let me know and I wll pull some in March for you.

Jerry:

No worries, mine do that most every year that we have a hot Indian Summer. Last year was an example, and I had more and bigger blooms than ever this year. It is a keeper!

When we were going through all the drought years, when it was so hot, my lotus often went dormant in August.  They'd turn all brown and yucky like that pic and then they'd just go dormant.  They always came back in the spring.  I also think that different types of lotus have different tolerance levels because my dwarf would always outlast the full sized lotus.

While it sounds like your lotus is alive, I suspect your Osmocote is, in fact, dead.  The 'granules', called prills by the manufacturer, do not dissolve.  What you are most likely seeing are the membrane coating, but the fertilizer originally inside the membranes has now been replaced by water.  If they are hard when you squeeze them, they still contain fertilizer.  I bet yours pop.<g>

The same thing happened to my lotus.  They were doing very well until the hottest point of the summer.  I'll follow everyone's advice and leave them alone.  I did pot them in an oil container.  I'm sure they ran out of room.  There is hope.   @O@
