Turtles and water Lillie's. what I have learned.
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:51:46 AM »
Some Lillie's they ignore or bother very little.  The Colorado they love. o(:-)
A few others seem popular too.  Unfortunately I don't know the names.
I added a small pot of nice ones from my reserve stock tank yesterday. No pads this morning!

So turtles can co exist with Lillie's. just trial and error. :'(

I cannot afford to err.  The turtles can't either if I hold a hot pot of water over them  :P

In my experience my red ear sliders like Laydekery Fulgens the best. Followed by Carolina Sunset.

As far as tropicals are concerned they have been particularly fond of Director Moore lately

I also think it depends upon their maturity and perhaps their sex.  I had two mature red sliders, females, and they never met a lily in my pond that they didn't love...    Last year they killed 3 tropicals and did a wonderful job of pruning my 3 hardies....  >:(-   Notice that I said "had".

Mikey's right - age and sex do have a lot to do with it.  I found that tropicals were always the preferred treat and if I had enough of those in the ponds, the hardies got to keep their leaves.  Buds never ever opened without at least a large bite out of the side . . .

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you move a lily or add a lily to the pond it's always going to be the first one they go after.  If the lilies are there and part of the environment and unchanging, they stand a better chance of being ignored.

Snappers are much worse - they chop all leaf and flower stems off at the dirt.
