Hey Jerry, where's the darn tube tester?

Jerry, John and a few others here will remember this. The family was gathered in front of the only TV when suddenly the picture would disappear into a pinprick of light in the center of the screen. You would then unplug it and take the back off. There were several cathode ray tubes in their individual sockets. For you young'uns, a cathode ray tube looked like a skinny light bulb with more elements inside of it.  Smart (anal) people would label them 1,2,3 along with their individual sockets and tape the numbers on their sockets and them.

You then went to any local 7-11 and walked up to the tube tester. You found the socket that fit one tube and turned the knob. A large needle either read "Good" (green area) or "Bad" red area. You identified the bad tube and looked at the number on it. You then opened the cabinet on the bottom and found the right tube. Going back home, you plugged all of the tubes back into their sockets, put the back on the TV and plugged it in. You turned it on and The Lone Ranger was riding hard with Tonto by his side once again.

What brought all of this on? I was watching TV last night when the screen went to a slim yellow line. I thought it was the satellite but it was the old TV. This thing still had a picture tube and was over 2 feet deep from front to rear. So I get online this morning and am amazed that these aren't even available anymore, I haven't shopped for one in 10 years. So, I now have a 32" flats creen. The picture quality is amazing but I kind of miss that old tube tester... and the Lone Ranger.

  Bullfrog we too had to get rid of our old huge oak cabinet Mitsubishi tv set we bought prolly 20 yrs ago. We felt horrible losing it to the skinny flat screen high falootin thingy we had no choice in buying. It does have a nice picture quality but how long will it last.................................NOT 2O YRS I'M THINKIN.........................no way  . We drug our old beauty out to the truck (she had some poundage on her let me tell ya) and packed her in and drove her to the recycle spot at the dump, lowered her down and left her there all alone w/ all the other poor discarded tubers.............said our goodbye's and drove away ................it was a sad day :'(. They don't make um like that anymore  . My condolences to you on your loss

Ah yes, the old tube testers....  The bulbs were pretty pricey too as I recall...depending upon which tube burned out....

I miss the Lone Ranger, Sky King and a local show called Engineer Bill.  I used to enjoy watching Route 66 and recently the fetching one ordered some through NetFlix.  I watched a couple of episodes and quickly lost interest.  They seemed pretty lame the 2nd time around....

TV?? We didn't have one until 1963 so I don't follow about the tubes. I did have an old radio though that was about  3' high and had a huge round screen. I could bring in radio stations at night from south America. Also was a fan at that time of ham radio (before forums) and would lay for hours and listen to the conversations.

Well it was an adventure getting the damn thing hooked up. I actually managed a Radio Shack way back when and this thing stumped me. My old TV had a "Cable in" and two audio inputs which for the VCR. This thing has two rows of RCA jacks, an ethernet connection, a computer connection and about thirty others. My wife said "Let me do it" so I backed off.

She got it going immediately but the picture had a lot of radio interference making small dashes all over the screen. The old TV required a converter box which she simply hooked to the new TV. I promptly unhooked the converter box and started rerunning the wires with a flashlight and the manual. "No Signal" was all I could get. I now had one set of red, blue and green wires and one set of red, white and yellow wires and tried to just put it back like it was. The light would not come on on the converter box, it wouldn't power up.

Back to the manual and after about thirty minutes, I had a great picture but no sound. Get the remote and scroll through the settings, no go. I finally switched the two audio cables and now have a picture and sound. All I have to do now is figure out how to wire up the DVD player. I'll bet my grandson could do it in 5 minutes.

When stuff didn't work back in the late 60's and early 70's we used to just hit it hard on the side to get it to work..............did the trick some of the time
