Royal Poinciana cuttings
« on: November 12, 2006, 11:16:05 PM »
I was told by an expert, really he is one, that he had never seen a royal poinciana in this valley.
This is the parent tree.  I bought it at a palm society auction this summer.  It was in a one gallon can and maybe 12 inches tall.  As you can see it looks happy.
The cuttings died back, but suddenly sent up new growth.
I told the expert that Joyce overwinters bananas in New York!  Surely I can overwinter these trees in zone 10  We will see.....

Jerry there's no reason why you can't grow that in zone 10  (8:-)

There are several blooming size trees here in the Phx valley. I have a 5' tall one in the ground for it's first winter this year, can't wait to see how big it is in a year! Yours will be fine. I can't imagine why there aren't more in your area.

On "Dave's Garden" I notice that a couple of people in California (Fullerton & Camarillo) say they grow it.  I should think that if it was being auctioned off locally then someone in the area must be growing it.   (8:-)

The auction was in Camarillo too!

Thanks Lynn.  as I Said if Joyce can grow bananas  in New York, we have a shot.
Lynn I assume you are in Reno?

The writer who said he had never seen one in the San Fernando Valley, is a sharp guy.  But his never seeing one does not mean they don't exist. O0

For it's first winter in the ground you might want to consider bubble wrapping it and/or wrapping white Christmas lights around it on nights it's supposed to freeze.  It appears to be growing quickly and perhaps next year it will have enough meat on its bones that it will take a frost better.  '97' was the last time we had a good freeze here and I wished I had bubble-wrapped a young plumeria because it didn't survive that freeze.... :'(  .......live and learn.....

Nope, I just put my locale in my profile   :) I'm near Phx. Mine is in a very protected location and I'm not worried about that but I have to start thinking about moving my potted plumies to better locales.  (8:-)

Will do Mike.  Joyce uses black plastic trash bags with green matter in them.  The black absorbs heat and the decomposing stuff gives off heat.

Lynn, we gave jade plants to an aunt in Phoenix, they did well until the summer heat sizzled them

Jerry,
I collected seed while I was in Hawaii last month. Check out the pic of the seedlings I have growing on the photo page that I just uploaded photos to.

Jerry, I had a small var. jade plant outside this year, it did fine. I've been working to incorporate microclimates though, cooler places are a must here  ;D

I added my city to my profile, but it's not showing, not sure what I did wrong   ::)

azreno,
I am going to post in Technology Talk how to get your location to show under your name. Not trying to make you search for it but most forums don't like cross posting.

I think you should be able to grow it, Jerry. I am wondering the same thing about my Cananga odorata (Ylang Ylang). Its rated to zone 9, I am almost there. I have a very very nice seedling that's growing pretty fast. I have been wondering if I can let it get big (I mean, REALLY BIG) in a container and try to plant it out here. I know everyone will say "No" to me, but I really think I may try it in a few years. I can't keep it greenhouse forever, it will become too large to toy with. There are more than a few examples here in Gainesville of trees that aren't really supposed to be here that are here and have been growing here for 10-30 years.

Lilith, one idea is a huge container on a 4 wheel dolly.  I did that with Plumeria and now have it in a more sheltered area for the winter.  Funny, cause it will be 82 today.  Too good to last. O0
