A few from the winter of '06/'07
« on: November 13, 2006, 08:34:58 AM »
Andrew's theme with a twist.<g>  Not sure what all will bloom all winter, but I figure it is worth watching.

To start, I'll close out the summer of '06....this is the last day of the last bloom on the last V. cruziana.

Beautiful lily, and great pic.  Brightens my day on this cold dreary one in KY.

Craig, Are you growing any of the white second day Victoria amazonica that Kit showed on the WGI site earlier this week? It really intrigued me. I am thinking about sending off for some of it's seed.
I have grown the longwood hybrid before. Is the V. amazonica much harder to grow than some of the hybrids or Back-cross Hybrids out there?
Any info you can share would be appreciated.
Tim

Hi Tim,

If your are talking about the ama I think you are, I sent it to Kit earlier this season.<g>  I rarely pay attention to the second day flowers because I have butchered them for pollination purposes on the first.

I've never grown any of the backcrossed hybrids.  I tend to grow only the two species for the seed and any LH I grow are invariably out of my ponds by the time the pads hit 10".  I don't do backcrosses, so there is no sense in keeping the LH around.

Of the ones I do grow....LH are far and away the easiest, ama not too bad as long as the water is kept hot...but cruziana give me fits every year!  It is a good year if I get enough cruz to survive to provide seed for the next year, I don't think I've ever had a surplus.

I love this idea because I really love your photos . . . they are always seem like I'm looking right at the flower . . . I don't like photos that have obviously had the colors adjusted.  Keep posting and we'll keep looking for the scentivision!

Here is the pic I was talking about.
I copied the page so Kit would get credit for the pic. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was posting a pic I took in this case.
Some may like it and some may not. I just like the contrast it shows.

Oh well time to make plans for a new home for some more "Big" girls.  ;)

That is one of the ama I gave to Kit, so I guess I will be growing the white one next year as that is the only ama line I have at the moment.<g>  I have no idea how it works with Kit and specific requests...I don't even know if she selfed it or what.

'Peach Blow' was blooming today, another Pring lily form '41.  But like his classic Midnight from that year....it is a result of controlled crosses and not mutation.  Mutation has little to do with hybridizing outside of the occassional sport.

Peach Blow is a reluctant vivip and getting harder to find.  Seems as though many Pring lilies that set seed are being lost due to the sometimes ignorant, sometimes intentional sale of seedlings.  It is sad that so few people understand that seed from a hybrid does not grow to be the identical plant.  Sadder still that some neer-do-wells are happy to feed on the ignorance and sell seed with the implication that the buyer will indeed get a named plant.

Craig and Sean,
I saw pics from both of you on the Victoria site. Do either of you have vivip pads I could get from you. Craig, you said it was reluctant but a good performing lily. I would like to try and get some to grow out.

Peach Blow is a fine perfomer...it just produces very few vivips and usually only late in the season.  I haven't noticed any yet, but I haven't really looked that hard.  I'll check them out this week.

Winter-like weather is settling in for the next five or six days ( low 70's/barely 50), so this could well be the last nightbloomer flower for the season.

Missouri has to be about my favorite night...so at least it is a fitting end.<g>

Sigh...now you know that's my favorite white trop. O0
I grew one in the mud pond and it became enormous!
Pads almost 2 feet wide and big waxy looking 10" blooms. 8)

What a perfect photo of it too. :)

Here is one of my personal favorites and as it happens this one is a mutation ( or sport) of Pring's 'Midnight'.  Even in 9b it grows year round with no protection, though in the coldest spells blooms falter.  Summer is its time and the number of wilted blooms is minimal.  Compact growth, pads well under two feet.  Its got all the attributes to please the most demanding critics, I should have named it 'Toyota'.<g>

Oh Man, . . . . . Toyota (or whatever you call it) is a phenom!  That color is just so deep and glorious.  When I grow up, I'm going to live somewhere where there are absolutely NO trees . . . .

37 scrawny degrees this morning and the water temps didn't quite reach 70, but these three blooms managed to open.  Nice to see as I am bloom challenged at the moment , weather aside.  Had the goats escape and get into the lily area.  I have a lot of stalks, but kind of short on buds.<g>

They look happy my friend. I have a mess of pads but no blooms with all this rain we have had.

Charlie's Pride is looking great! I hope your suplus is increasing. How are you doing with Midnight Serenade stocks? I'd like my name added to one next spring if you have any you are willing to release.

Cheers,

They'll be happier soon...we are suppose to be back into the 80's by the weekend.<g>

Charlie's Pride numbers are increasing nicely.  I sent a bunch to Mexico, but bet I still have near triple digits.  Plans are in the works to get some of Mr. Winch's unreleased stuff into production soon.  Ambrosia, one I really like is coming along nicely as is Camelot.

After years of delay, caused in large part by the failed attempt to tissue culture it, we are hoping to release Midnight Serenade this coming season.  It took a leap forward this week when I found a bag of tubers I'd forgotten about.  New Years resolution....get my propagating stock organized and stored in one spot!  My preferred method of helter skelter just isn't cutting it anymore.<g>

Here's today's picture of the vivip with mottled pads I've been watching.  Some of you may remember I posted the first bloom awhile back.

Been watching it and I have to say...I still see no future for it as it does nothing for me in the looks dept. and appears to be sterile.  I see no sense in hoping it will somehow miraculously improve, so its test period is over and it is out.

It has the look of a Tina or Panama Pacific. I like both of those and the addition of mottled pads would seem to be a plus in my book.
