A silver lining to our house fire

I was at the house sorting through items. When I walked in a worker was scraping the vinyl flooring from the bathroom floor. It was ugly, old vinyl but wasn't damaged during the fire. The floor covering guy comes walking in and says "Why is he scraping the bathroom floor? He's supposed to scrape the kitchen floor" so because of someone's mistake we get a new bathroom floor also. I didn't question the guy scraping, I figured the insurance told him to do so. So DARN!! now they have to replace the bathroom flooring too at no cost to us.  :D

How long until you get to move back in, Cath?

I was thinking about you last week, in a meeting I attend with the Police Department, and the topic was supposed to be Arson, but instead, it being October and that being Fire Prevention Month, that's what the guy talked about.

He made the point: If your house catches fire, DO NOT go running in to try to save some belonging, the piggy bank, or even a pet.  I remembered how quickly your fire became really dangerous, and I know I never would go running into a burning building!   The guy said that most people who do that - MOST of them - end up being overcome by heat or fumes, and die.

We will be out of the house for 3 months for sure and possibly 4. Our son works for a window company and they offered us a nice discount so we can replace the windows with nice, energy efficient ones. I met that guy at the house today. Friday, hopefully, we will meet with the contractor. if his schedule works out. The kitchen is nothing but studs now and there are changes we want to make to the floor plan (Jonna.....I think about your comment of 'pretend you are remodeling the kitchen'). We figured this is the best time to do any changes. Some things we realize we will have to cover the cost on but if not now, when? So although this was an extremely scary and exhausting ordeal we have seen some good things come from it. There have been changes we've wanted to make to the kitchen and bath but did not have plans in the works yet. Guess we do now, huh?
Ok...I admit I DID go back in the house after my daughter's bunny but the smoke wasn't in that end of the house yet, if it was I wouldn't have attempted it. And had I not done so I'm sure he would have died. That bedroom ended up getting the most smoke damage of all the bedrooms.

Karen....I am a total animal lover so of course I thought of the pets but if the flames were anywhere except the kitchen or if the smoke was too thick I would not have gone back in. DH and I had just reached the front door when I thought of the bunny so zipped back in after him.
You are so sweet and caring to ask if I need anything.......some sanity perhaps.......the past couple of weeks have been so nuts and I haven't always been able to sleep well every night. I think being tired has affected my brain. I will do something like run an errand then realize AFTER I get 'home' that there was something else I needed to do while in that area of town. GRRRRRR
All of our belongings are either at a warehouse getting cleaned or getting laundered. We literally had 2 changes of clothes each, what we had on that night and a bag we had not unloaded from our vehicle from being at our daughter's a couple days before. I finally bought some cheap sweatpants and shirts so I had more but DH is 6'7" and can only find clothes his size in specialty stores and then they cost an arm and a leg. That has probably been our biggest challenge as far as things to get us by. Many kind people have loaned or given us temporary furniture, dishes, linens, etc. This rental house is sparse but we have beds, something to sit on and appliances to cook with.

I'm so happy that you are seeing the silver lining, making lemonade is one of those things that some people can do when others just get lost in the down side.   It's tough but you know, remodeling is horrible at times and people pay lots of their savings to go through all kinds of trauma to remodel a house.   How do I know that?  Ohhh, have I been there.  It's going to be worth it though and when it is all done you seem to be the type that will remember the good and forget the bad.  Good for you.

My husband is 6'8"... let me know what sizes your hubby wears - maybe we'll have stuff we could send to your hubby.  Shoes sizes too - mine wears a size 17

We have an appt. with the main contractor and the restoration head set for 8:30 AM tomorrow, Friday. Please pray that this goes smoothly. There are some things the insurance covers that we won't be using....for example several windows were ruined or damaged by the fire or firefighters. We have chosen to replace all the windows with more energy efficient ones (we will be paying for the new windows), we're hoping we can end up with credit for repairs we're entitled to but won't have done. This would help cover the cost of some 'extras' we would like to take care of.
We have a list of things to help us remember all the questions we have and changes we want to make.

Tammie....wait till I tell my hubby that yours has bigger feet than he does. He wears a 16 and gets so frustrated trying to find new shoes, it's hard to find them, I'm sure your hubby runs in to the same thing. You are too kind to offer him clothes and shoes. We should be getting ours back from the laundry service by mid week next week so I think we're on the down hill side finally. But thank you again for being so thoughtful!!
