The pond today
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:07:10 PM »
Just to brighten things up for those who are missing blooms in their pond.

This is a new Foxfire bloom, the green pads to the left are from Wood's Blue Goddess, the mottled one at bottom right belongs to Foxfire.

Here is a 2nd or 3rd day bloom from Wood's BG.

Tropical pink NOID

Here is the Dauben blooming among all the big guys.  This is a descendant of one that Daniel sent from Argentina.  I know, I really need to get in the pond and trim the dead pads.

Two Cannas are blooming, not a lot but they are still putting out blooms.  I think I need to get in there and fertilize them so they will bloom more.

I believe this is a type of papyrus, it is growing like crazy and I'm going to have to divide it soon.

Beautiful Jonna!  I love that red dragonfly, such a sharp, clear picture too!   O0

I love the look of papyrus, and I can't believe all the mollies in that first picture--I'd love to put my hand in there just to see if I could 'feel' them!

Thanks, yes life is still going on down here in the south :)   Kitty, if you put your hand in there they would swim into it, they are really tame.  We now have a rock next to the pond at the right height to sit on and stick your feet in the pond for the Molly pedicure.  I feed them now, they are still keeping the pond clear of algae so they get food.  It keeps them tame as well, they can see a human coming out the door across the terrace and they all swarm to that end of the pond.

Jonna, that is one of my favorite things about having a pond--having the fish swim in a large hoard toward me wherever I am.  I think they hear me come out the kitchen door and since I am above them on the porch, they all come towards the porch and watch me walk down the steps, then to the garage where the food is kept.  Obviously, they are much smarter than I give them credit for...and they are so trusting.

I would love a molly pedicure:  if I could stand the tickling!

Even though I am in a moderate climate , our blooms are long gone.  I think the shorter days are a trigger.  The temps are not bad at all.  Anyone have an answer?

I'm not sure Jerry but I think it is the hours of daylight.  I've been reading a lot of aquarium sites because I have this dream going about planting the inside pond.  Anyway, there are long day bloomers and short day bloomers and most of the tropicals are short day bloomers.  Our sunlight here only varies from 11.x hours to 13.x hours in a year.  We don't have those long days in summer that trigger many plants to bloom but we don't have the short ones in winter either.    I also think that is why the tropical lilies are the last ones blooming as long as the weather stays warm up there.  I've noticed that from pictures here, the hardies are done but the trops are still putting out a few blooms even far in the north.  I'm sure temps are part of it too, but the water temps will go down faster when there are less hours of sunlight even if the air is still warm.  My pond water is still over 80°, last week I checked it and it was 84°.  I have to get in and cut the pads back because I can't find the floating thermometer anymore, it's under there somewhere.

Our lilies are packing it in.  It's nice to see your lilies blooming so well still, or always?  I love the spotted canna flower.  Is that a log or petrified concrete in your pond  ;)  Can't believe you have so many mollies swarming around in the pond!  :o

I'm giving up on papyrus - too much work to keep it small and it uses way too much water.  :'(  Thanks for sharing your gorgeous pond, Jonna!

Annette, that is a log.  I put it in there to try and lower the PH a bit.  It's a concrete pond and the PH is sky high, I think that is why the lilies didn't do well when I first got them, in fact 2 of them died.  It may also be why my lotus, which had several pads that reached the surface, died.  I was hoping to be able to plant orchids or ferns on the log but it just gets too much sun, particularly in the summer.  I may try a more sun tolerant fern.

Your papyrus uses too much pond water?  You can tell a difference in the pond level without it?  That's interesting.   I have 2 kinds of what I call papyrus, one has flat, strap leaves and this is the other one.  I also have a miniature one in the bowl pond upstairs.  It isn't doing as well, I need to figure out what it needs.

Nice blooms Jonna. I have to wait till spring. You are lucky.
Did you try your papirus un potted, bare root? I had one at home, over 2 meters height but when I put it into the pond bare rooted, after a time, it became more dense and strong but much shorter. Bare roots also grew nice and now collects algae like stuff around.

No, I haven't tried it bare root, mainly because it needs something to hold it upright when we get strong winds.  That happens occasionally in the rainy season and even in a plastic pot they were blowing over.  I've got them in concrete pots now with some soil at the bottom and a lot of rocks above.  The roots have grown out and over the pots though and it does look nice and the baby fish hide in them, one reason I have so many Mollies  ::)   I've had to divide the flat leafed, umbrella plant already and the pond has only been up since March or April.  I took out a big section for a friend and it has filled back in again.  I bought the papyrus in the picture this summer, maybe in June or July?  It's grown a lot.  They are both about 2 meters above the top of the pot, almost 3.   I like the height but I think I'll move them around a bit when I finally get in the pond.  You'll laugh but it has been what seems cold to us, the air temps are only in the mid 80's F (less than 30°C) this last week and I'm putting off getting in the pond until it warms up a bit.

The log really works?  At first I thought you may be starting a floating plant island  ;D

I had papyrus, the large ones and the smaller variety, growing barerooted in the half barrels which I used to filter water into a smaller barrel with water irises and such.  When the sun is at it's peak during warm weather the water gets sucked up into the plant.  Leaving poor goldies (squiter eaters) and the pump high and dry.  Now that I've tossed those water sucking plants, including the fast growing umbrella plant and cattails, my barrels require a lot less refills.  That ought keep me out of the deep edge of penalty water usage.  >:(-

I don't really know if the log works, they say it does.  It isn't floating, it's on a couple of rock ledges that stick out of the wall there.  I'd love to plant stuff on it, that was my plan.  I hadn't realized in Feb that by July it would be in full sun all day.  The sun here just fried anything I've put on there.  Now, the sun is a little lower and the wall starts shading it earlier, I can't figure out what I could grow there that would survive the summers.

I remember water rationing in Marin, not fun.  Particularly not fun if you've been doing your best before they put it in since they always seem to just want everyone to drop a percentage across the board.  If you were careful before, you suffer more.  At least, that is how it worked up north and it really irritated me.  After the first time, I tried to keep my water use UP so when it happened again I'd have more of a margin to reduce.  counter productive in many ways.
