Two more. Colorado is the one hardy that I have that is a standout. It holds its head up high for me like a tropical.

The leaves in some of the pictures can be misleading although that was not the intent. They have the solid green pads. The one near the top with dark mottling is the trop Lindsey Woods pads. the circular lightly mottled one lower in the group is from a different hardy.

I have always known Colorado is too big for my biggest pond but finally, after years of lusting after it, I bought one anyway last summer. It was a baby and didn't bloom but it has pads up already and I'm very excited. I don't give a rip if it eats my entire pond as long as it BLOOMS

Hey Joyce.........

I had the first Colorado open today outside of the greenhouse. It is actually only the second Colorado of the year as I have not had time to fertilize and repot my lilies yet this year.
I posted the pics on the other post about Spring Pix...

LeeAnne... feed it heavy and often but leave it in a smaller container. It can easily spread over 8 feet but I have them only about 2 or 3 feet across with constant blooms. You can actually "bonsai" just about any lily. I have had Tina and Panama Pacific lilies with a spread of only 1.5 feet with blooms. Now the blooms look as good as a normal one but like the lily itself, they are much smaller. The blooms are usually about 2" across at that point. The only difference in the colorado is that being a hardy, it will continue to grow the rhizome over the course of a season.
If you feed them heavily, they will bloom well. If they do not have enough food, they will exert their energy into growing the plant and later tubering as it wants to protect the species. Propagation is a higher imperative than blooming and reproducing through seed from everything that I have seen. This is however just my opinion.

I agree Tim. :)
If a lily 'eats' a pond, it's only the lily growers fault, not the lily.
The size of ANY lily can easily be controlled.
But of course, that is obvious when you hear how some growers have such problems all the time.
You know it's the grower, not the lily.
Especially when no one else is having 'problems'. ::)

I grew Colorado in a one gallon pot several years ago. Lots of blooms to boot. It was easy enough to divide in the spring and repot into the one gallon pot. I finally gave it to a friend but it is very easy to keep small, just takes some maintenance.

Cheers,

Funny Tim I had the same thought. My Colorados are out and looking good althought they have a bit of a peachy er look. I would not own any if it were not for Joyce turning me on to them!

Colorado is a favourite here too and I can let mine get as large as it likes. It blooms non-stop all summer in our pond, one of the first in spring and the last in the fall. We keep ours in the deep (4') end of the large pond. It outgrows it's pot every year and produced lots of very large blooms. The blooms here are peachier in the spring too. Here are some photos of mine from previous years.

Tim...LOL good thing I didn't tell everyone that it was you, Craig, and Sean turned me on to tropicals then we would have a bit of a conundrum... oh oh I just did didn't I....Oops.
Seriously you guys do great work with all your plants. Hope I can get my Pond to grow some them well.  I remember doing the Wal Mart Lily experiment and when I was picking out plants I distinctly remember deciding on two Colorados because Joyce made such a fuss over them. They are very prolific and I suspect they are growing out of their pot. I have a Texas Dawn that has sent a huge tuber over the edge of it's pot and that tuber is already sending up pads to the surface. May have to climb back in the pond this weekend to "feel around" the bottom. Andy

I also received a Colorado in a trade from Maryvonne last year. (Thanks again Mayvonne  :)).  It did really well and, although I can't see any lilies yet under the ice and snow, from the sounds of things I may have to repot it again this spring  O0
