I am without a computer An easy fix grrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: December 08, 2009, 06:49:20 PM »
This one is an old clunker.
My nifty one is not recognizing me, not my name and it won't let me enter a password.
My research tells me I need a vista start up disc.  My answer is huh?
I have "make it work" coming, but tied up with cataract surgery tomorrow, so it looks like late Thursday.
I will miss you guys and checking in o(:-)

I'll miss you Jerry, but mind the doctor and do what he says about taking care of your eye.  Your computer can wait a day or two... ;)

Jerry,

When you acquire a pc with Vista installed, the FIRST thing you are told to do is make a backup startup Vista disc.   This disc is what your computer is asking you for.  All you need to do is find where you put that disk.

BTW, what do you think caused your PC to cease recognizing you?  Have you been surfing where one should never go, or has anyone under the age of 30 had access to your machine?

Assuming your pc "rescue" service gets your Vista machine running, get them to create that Vista backup startup disc for you.

Additionally, your Vista machine should have a "Recovery" drive partition.  Generally, you can boot your machine in "safe" mode (By rebooting and constantly tapping the F8 key as it starts up.) and then either use "system restore" to restore your machine to an earlier time (Before the problem) or use the "Recovery drive" to recover.  But knowing how resourceful you are, you probably already tried that.

Jerry,

or has anyone under the age of 30 had access to your machine?

HA HA HA. I know all to well what that's all about. People less than age 15 are even more deadly to the PC...

Good advice.

I have a sign on my computer reading  "Batteries Putz!"  So I dutiful changed them.  Still no luck.
My pal came over and asked if i checked the batteries.  "Of Course" I said, "do I look stupid?"

He said "let's change them again!"

Can you believe it!!!!!!   GggRrrrrr. We need a stupid icon.

My laptop is in the shop and not sure how long it will be. Right now, I'm using my wfe's laptop to take care of a few on line things. :(

I failed to say it's a wireless keyboard.  I dumped the wireless mouse for the same reason.
I had a Dell keyboard on hand.

I don't know about you all (though I remember reading a longtime back) but I got a new laptop in July with Vista Premium Installed.  I qualified for the new Windows 7 for free.  I received that a month ago, did all the back up, etc., it told me to do.  I installed the new Windows 7, and it looked really good!  When I tried to get on my internet (wireless, through Alltel) it kept freezing on me.  Talked to HP and Alltel, my internet is not compatibale with Windows 7, they (Alltel) is working on a update driver!!!!  Yeah, right!  My internet and phones have sucked since I moved to this new rental house in June of 2008, can't get anything else here except dial up (which I had for a month) what a dinasour! or Wild Blue or the like, way too expensive!  Sorry but had to vent and sorry not on here much anymore, with a lot going on and sucky internet!  Hope you figure it out soon Jerry!  And hope you get your laptop fixed soon PondmaninAL.  Hope all here have a Great Christmas and a Great New Year!

It's a desktop and all is now fine!
I bought Roxio once and sure enough it was not compatible with Vista.  I am not a detail guy, and it has cost me

My neighbor has Vista and they were trying to install some software and it wouldn't install.  They asked for my help and when I looked at the box it didn't show that it was compatible with Vista.  The salesman told her it would install fine, but when we checked there was a Vista (later) version of the software.  Very frustrating to have to find software that will work on a "new" OS!
I'm broke and can't afford to pay attention, so you might have to lend me an ear.

Well, my laptop was trash. Seeing that my repair guy is my BIL, I now have a smaller but faster Dell Latitude with a docking station and it was free. I even have a carrying bag for it. It has XP installed.
