plants and blooms on a gray day
« on: December 22, 2009, 12:39:58 AM »
There is a cold front moving through, I think it has caused a freeze up in Florida.  At any rate, it has been cold and gray for the last two days.  Our lows are in the mid 60's and the highs never got out of the 70's.  I know, I know, but we are freezing.  Our houses, clothes and thin blood make it feel as cold as a winter storm in the north.  So, to cheer up and feel warmer, I took some pics in the pond and yard.

There is nothing like a yellow bloom to brighten a gray day.

When I planted these bougainvillea last March, this is the look I had in my mind.  They are exceeding my expectations although, because they are in relatively small pots, they need a lot of watering when it doesn't rain, almost daily if it is hot and sunny.

This is how they look from behind.  The citrus is a sour orange or seville orange with a lime grafted on it.

A new addition.  When the Musseanda died I got this Bleeding Heart Bower vine to replace it.  I hope it will get enough light here and will grow out and hang down to reach more light.

I also got an Elephant Foot a few weeks ago, it's a bit frayed now because it is irresistible to the kitten.

I'm so happy with my coleus.  Both of these are in full sun and it just deepens the reds.  They do sometimes wilt in the heat but they perk up as soon as it cools off.

I forget the name of these in English, in Spanish they are called teléfono.   This is a cutting from a friends vine because I loved the variegation on the leaves.  It will grow but the new leaves will not be this large until it has climbed up a ways.

My Agave pup that I planted in a coconut when it was only a couple inches tall.  It will eventually break out but I'm enjoying it like this.

A couple of lilies that are blooming now.   One from Wood's Blue Goddess

and a small, new Foxfire.  I think the cooler weather has slowed the lilies down. The blooms are smaller and the pads are smaller as well.  The pond temp is holding at 75°F so far.

Hope these chase the gray away for you too.   8)

Oh yeah, that worked really well Jonna!  Like soothing balm for my eyes AND my soul!  Your pics are always beautiful--the colors and mix of textures...and I love plants in unusual pots.  What a neat idea to put a agave in a coconut:  now if I could just get my hands on a coconut....... 8)

Thanks, Jonna.  We've had day after day of gray, so a little color is nice.

It's very chilly here today courtesy of a very chilly breeze that popped up last night.  Yes, you are getting a lot of bougainvillea flowering from such small pots.....but it's also a good way of containing them.....just ask MikeW.....   ;D

So, when your agave is mature do you plan on making tequila?  {:-P;;   ;D

Making tequila, ahhhh.  I'm not sure which type of agave it is and even if I had the right kind if i made it down here it wouldn't be tequila but some other designation, probably mezcal.  Tequila can only be made in the state of Jalisco and a part of another state, I think Colima.  it's like the vineyards in France, different areas own the designation.   Down here in Yucatan, the agave type plants are generally hennequen.  It looks very similar and they use it to make sisal rope, thread, even clothing.  In the old days of huge haciendas and enormous wealth here it was because of hennequen.  It was the only thing used to make rope and rigging before plastic.   So, maybe I'd have to make rope from my little agave plant.  I think I'll just get it a bigger pot when it breaks out of the coconut.   ::)

It was sunny on Christmas day but has been overcast since then until today.  Today I woke up to sunshine and warmth, very happy about that.    I really need to get in the pond and cut back the dead pads and do some clean up but when it is chilly outside getting into 74° water is not appealing.   It's probably been only a few degrees warmer than the pond this week.  For us, that is a major cold snap.

Once again we have some color from you during our very "cold" and more dismal days than yours, Jonna.  All your plants are wonderful and colorful.  I love the idea of planting an agave in the coconut shell.  Now the hunt for a coconut!  8-)~

Who is who, in the photo?  Can you give the names of everyone, please?

The second man, wasn't he at your place before, Jonna?  With a little dark-eyed girl, if I remember correctly?
