Pete made another bed
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:07:24 AM »
Well actually headboard. When his daughter saw the bed he made for my son Kelly, she said she was jealous because she and her husband have a not so nice box springs, a nice mattress on just a metal frame but never had a headboard. So because I never know what to get for the grown up kids for birthdays and anniversary etc, I latched on the idea for Pete to make a headboard out of oak and let her choose the basic design. She found one similar to this at a local furniture store so we were able to go there and take pictures and see how it was put together. Then I insisted he purchase a router table because cutting a straight slot with it just held in his hands, I guess is next to impossible. He practiced some of the cuts on pine 2 x 4s first to make sure what needed to be done. This is actually only his second attempt at something nice and the first out of oak. OH boy, now my head is spinning with ideas. Poor Pete.

I'd like him to tackle making new workshop cabinets. Right now it is composed of two desks that were dragged home from a school where my X used to teach. Some of the drawers are just stacked and not even installed. It does function that way but I think he'd get a lot of experience doing it. And if he made a mistake, it wouldn't matter so much than if he was doing a nice piece of furniture.

Thanks, I hope he liked doing that because he's retired and layed off now and has never had a hobby but working. He could throw things together out of 2 x 4s and plywood but never used nice wood before. So I'm going to encourage him to keep trying.

Thanks folks. Cindi has a night stand that is way lower than her bed and too wide for the space they have to put it. So I asked Pete to look at our nightstand and think if we could reconfigure it to match the headboard and fit in the space better. We have to find a source for oak though. Home Depot only carries 1 bys.
