Figured out it is a fungus on my fish

I have two little comets left. Now that it is so sunny today you can see a white fungus on these two. We have been using Fungus Eliminator.

I would imagine there was a underlining cause for the fish to become infected by the fungus, such as parasites

How do you treat parasites in a pond? I have done a ton of reading on this and is seems everyone is selling a product.

yes some fungas is secondary, but there are some protozon like  Costia or Chilodonella, both can be fatal

Since nothing new has been added to the pond, meaning no new fish or plants since last year, what makes something like this happen now?

A likely source could be birds, specifically herons.  Herons will stand in the water and eat whatever fish are not hiding and also poop in the pond, inoculating your pond with a plethora of pathogens, including all sorts of nasty bacteria, protozoa, and other stuff that can mean horrible things for your fish.  As they say, poop happens...

And it's not just herons. We have hundreds of birds that visit the pond, not to mention cats, coyotes, deer, skunks, possums, mice, rats, frogs,  and ... wait for it... herons.

also lots of bactireas are common in your waters at all times, like SAP, and when the fish are at a low in their imunity like winter, stress do to lots of things, they can easily overcome them.  In the  I lke to use Koizyme as a preventative for excesive Aeromonas, Pseudomonas bacterias.  I have found 3 dead fish now that my ice is gone, I would love to add some, but the water is not yet very warm and I think I might be wasting money putting it in now, but I may just tomorrow

I agree, it whatever it was, was probably in the water all along, but the fish were strong enough to withstand it.  But, after that #$Y%&!! freeze, their immunity got shot down and they subcombed.  Too darned bad.   :'(
