lost my soul puppy
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:26:48 AM »
On Friday night a couple hours after feeding Bandit - he started drooling and panting and trying to throw up - the tell tale signs of bloat.  I rushed him to the emergency vet. They tried to do a intubation to save him, but his stomach had already torsioned and at 8.5 there was no way he would survive surgery.  We had to make the tough, completely horrific decision to put him down.  It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make in my life.  He truly was my soul puppy.  He got me in a way no one and definitely no animal ever has. I rescued him from an abusive home at 18 months and he lived the last 7 years in luxury.  He was adored by my baby and would let her lay on top of him and she would poke him and "pet" him and he never cared.  He was ever the protector of us - including "protecting" me from another dog when he felt it was necessary.  He will be greatly missed.

:'( Iam so sorry for your loss. it never gets any easier to lose those you love so dear. You gave him love, shelter, and kindness when there was none for him,and Iam sure he repaid you ten fold.Do you have other pets, for me it helped spending the extra time and affection with them, helped the pain of losing my baby.
 Prayers for you all,
Hugs

I'm not sure what I'm going to plant on his memorial.  My friend brought me some really pretty yellow african daisies, those will definitely go there.  I'm going to get a memorial plaque as well.

For those that asked, bloat is something that can happen to all dogs, but is very prevalent in the deep chested dogs, great danes, boxers, mastiffs, labs.  They get gas stuck in their stomachs and can't release it.  They start drooling, trying to throw up, and they start panting, which makes the gas worst.  As their stomachs grow bigger from the gas, the linings touch and they are slippery and the stomach can twist and "torsion".  That cuts off the blood supply to both ends of their body killing the stomach and possibly the spleen.  It's a horrible, painful, horrific death.  It was best he didn't have to suffer through it.  It happens that fast.  If you have a dog make sure you have maalox or gas-x on hand and you can buy "bloat first aid kits" that have large needles and tubes to release the gas.  I'm wishing I had one now.  He had bloated about 7 years ago and I gave him maalox and it stopped it- it didn't work this time - it doesn't work if they are heaving (obviously).

I am so sorry for your lost.  It is always hard to let go of a family pet.  I have lost a dog once before and my cat is getting up there.  I really dread the day when I have to let mine go.  Bandit is now running in a place where he doesn't suffer any more and looking down smiling at you and your baby.
