Will bleach hurt my yard plants?
« on: May 21, 2010, 07:27:48 AM »
I'm planning on bleaching my deck and yard swing, then putting some wood protector on. What I'm wondering is, now that my plants are up and growing, will the bleach, when I hose it off of the deck and swing, harm the plants that are growing nearby?

Just wondering,
Steve

We used to get our NC house power washed once a year on the North side.
(and a few other shaded areas that used to grow algae/moss.)
The company used bleach, and it never seemed to bother the plants.

But we did water down the plants a lot to get the cleaning solution off the leaves,
and to water down whatever was seeping into the ground.

The plants did get some damage by the power washer...but not much.

I would be more concerned about any wood preservative getting on the plants.
I know when Bill used to put Thompsons Water Seal on our deck,
he would kill several perennials and annuals around the deck by getting it on them.  >:(

Thanks Joyce.
Good idea to wash the plants down afterwards. Really it's just along the edge of the deck, so not that much.
Wood protector will have to wait till it drys, but then I'm off on my bike memorial day weekend, but I DO want to get it on soon, and I'll be careful to watch gettting it on the plants. Was thinking of staining the deck and swing this year, maybe a cedar, warm color. I really have to quit inventing things to do!  {nono}

Just a follow up--I bleached the deck and swing last Sat. and washed the plants next to them down afterwards and all seems fine.
If I can find the time soon, I'll put the rest of my pail of Thompsons on.

Time, it's the single thing that I am very short on!  :(
In a year and a half, I'll have a lot more. O0 @O@
