« on: May 24, 2010, 11:14:41 AM »
Its black lace elderberry and its really looking like a japanese maple.  I am thinking about moving it in my front yard where I been wanting a maple  :)  Its so pretty with its pink blooms on the dark follage.

Those are real beauties Tink O0
I see them at ACE all the time, just too cheap to buy one.

I bought a Jap maples on ebay a few years ago, the plain one and it is doing very nicely in the front yard, thank you.

Cant wait to see it.  I put this in a spot up on the bank where I had my banana tree in some pretty furtile soil but am wondering if it would like more moisture than what its getting.  it didnt quite double in size in the one year so it might do better moved.  I think it also needs to be with different colored surroundings than what it is.  Its with a dwarf cherry laurel with dark green leaves so it doesnt show up as good as it should.. talked myself right into moving it!

Tink, is that a tree or bush? Either way it won't be long and it'll need more room anyway.

i think they are bushes but I have seen a few growing in pots at this big nursery and they have trained/prunned it to look just like a weeping japenese tree.  I am sure its definately gonna outgrow the area I got it in now.

Very nice! I have one too - planted it at the edge of my pond so it would grow outwards over the water.  Well it did this year and I had to cut off the largest branch because when it rained, it was sitting in the water and it didn't like that.  It's coming into bloom right now too - will take a picture tomorrow.

I got mine very inexpensively at Home Depot 2 years ago - they had lots of them that year.

I didn't get a chance to take a full photo today but here is one I posted a week or so ago that shows it in the background...

That's a Sutherland Gold Sambucus (Elderberry) in front of it to make it pop.  8)
I also have several Dwarf Russian Sages (Perovskia atriplicifolia x abrotanoides 'Little Spire') in front.
There are some Agastaches, Pink Poodle Echinacea, Fern Leaf Peony, Coreopsis Rosea, Angelina Sedum, Variegated Moor Grass,
Villa Taranto Japanese Maple, ornamental variegated clover, Lysimachia japonica ‘Minutissima’ , native Prickly Pear, and Tamarix planted in this same bed.
(not mentioning all the evergreens such as Hillside Creeper Pine and Monkey Puzzle Tree.)  ;)
And I am forgetting a bunch of stuff cuz it's so late.  :D

As you can see, everything is planted with plenty of room to grow into their mature size.
I still have at least a year to go until the perennials are mature, and many shrubs won't mature for years more.
If you're not a patient sort, gardening and landscaping isn't for you.  :P

This one is Black Beauty not Black Lace but you get the idea.......those iris are more than three feet tall. This is at a local iris display garden.

I am going to retake these with Jamie in there for size ref.
(and afternoon sun once it's in full bloom, only one bloom open now)
You can't tell that the Black Lace is over 4' tall and over 6' wide.

Bloom cluster...6-7" wide at least!

Here is my black lace elderberry early this morning in bright sun.
Looks like we are on the same blooming schedule, Joyce!

Many more blooms to come!

See how it drapes over the pond? Finally something did what I asked it to do! ;D

Great pictures:) A few weeks ago I purchased three Japanese Maples. Crimson Queen, Toyama Nishiki, and Virdis.
So far they are looking good :) I got in touch with a wonderful nursery gal who had a few left! I will have to take some pictures. The one that looks the best so far is the Crimson. The pictures of the Black Lace Elderberry are so pretty! I will have to look around to see if there are any around here. I remember years ago going to Canada for a family reunion, and someone would always make Elderberry pies, Gramma loved them!

Love the Black lace.   o(:-)  I've been considering pulling out some of my lilacs to put one in but I don't really have the space.  But I really do want one.  Had elderberry pie this weekend.  Mmmm, good.  :2thumbs: Berries were not from an ornamental plant, have no idea how whether the fruit from black lace or black beauty would be edible.  Red elderberry is poisonous, black elderberry is not - this is where scientific names would be much more useful.  Sambucus canadensis is the black, can't think what the red is right now.

Ugh, just looked at the Japanese Maple, the pretty one with the lace leaves and............ACK, looks like even the morning sun is burnng it up  :o I was able to get one of those BIG asphalt umbrellas to help shelter it. Darn winds here keep on blowing it over >:(- I tried holding it down with some rocks, I think I will switch to bricks :) I hate the thought of digging it up, it was only planted a few weeks ago :-\

I have a small one that is planted in afternoon sun here - I would say from about 1 til sunset.  The first 2 years it was "ok" but this year it's doing very nicely!  I make sure to keep it watered and it doesn't seem to mind the full HOT afternoon sun here.  Will get a picture over the weekend.

I was not aware of this bush until I saw your post.  I think it's beautiful, both the Black Beauty and the Black Lace.  I am going to have to go out on a mission and find one of those.  There was something kind of like that in Conneticut.  It was called a lace capped hydranga and it had all those flowers in a cluster of each individual bloom.  The hydranga here bloom in one big ball, different colors depending on the acidity of the soil.  I like the new England version more and brought one back but it isn't doing well.  Going to keep feeding it and trying to make it happy.  I sure could find a place real quick if I find one of your type bushes.

Your black lace elderberry is beautiful!  I don't need more plants but that one even has flowers!   :P  Must research this one!

I'm able to grow Japanese maples in my area Jerry but I do have them in the shade and close to the pond in pots.  No room to go in the ground in this shaded area.  One of them, the weeping Crimson Queen, became root bound last year and need to have the roots thinned.  She has recovered a bit roughly but she'll be gorgeous next spring!
