Worms eating my lilly pads
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:25:54 PM »
Hey guys.  I have those clear worms eating my lilly pads.  They are doing a good job trying to distroy my young tropicals!  I have mosquito dunks in the tanks already, would have thought the BT in that would have taken care of these things.  Anyway...  What is the best way to be rid of them?

I picked all the surface pads one time, and the worms came back.

Thanks!

David

Spray with BT every early morning before the sun gets on the pads & every evening after the sun goes down to try to kill them off.  Maybe someone else will have some suggestions of another product that will work, too.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

BT and mist the surface with insecticidal soap (I recommend Safer Brand) lightly every morning and night.

Thanks Kat, I will ramp up the BT attacks.

Hi Joyce, Looooong time, eh?    Joyce, do you use that soap in a fish situation?  Do you treat the plant away from the fish, and then return???

Thanks for the replies

I used the liquid form, Thuracide HPC, and it took care of the larvae of the China Marks Moth. There are two types of BT. one works on caterpillars and the other works on mosquitoes.
Happy ponding,

DavB. Yes, looong time.  8)

Like I said, I lightly mist. Very lightly. With fish present, including beta Fish.
No problems yet.

Many aquatic insects have a breathing tube used to 'snorkle' air from the surface.
The soap sits on the surface and interferes with their breathing tube.
I have seen mosquito larva flip out and panic when I lightly spray the surface.
Their breathing tube gets clogged by the soap and they can not get air.
