Cyperus albomarginata 'Starburst'
« on: November 28, 2006, 03:51:36 PM »
Not sure how "new" this plant really is, but it is new to me.  I was told it gets only about 2' tall and as the variegation is spread through and not particularly glaring....I don't find it as disagreeable as I do most variegates.

Anyone here have experience with this plant?

I have it growing out by the road. I planted it 2 years ago. It went from a 6 inch pot size to about a 6ft x6ft area in those 2 years. AND that is DRY. I am not certain how much faster it would spread if it was wet. My word: put it where you can contain it. Unless you want it to run rampant. Mine is in full sun.

Thanks.  Sounds about like a typical Cyperus.  I've read in the recent passed that there is a movement afoot to ban them here.  You here anything on that?

Craig, when you say,"here." do you mean local to you or all of Florida? I have heard nothing about that.

I do think I remember (somewhere in my dim cave of a mind) that both the big Egyptian and the slightly smaller (in FL anyway) Umbrella sedge are on the noxious list. I planted a single rhizome of Eqyptiam when we moved here 3.5 years ago and its now a stand that measures about 10 ft x 10 ft.

I love the big Egyptian Papyrus but my weather too cold and my greenhouse too small.

I remember the Cyperuses getting huge in Phoenix, I can see where they would be weedy in the right climates.

Well now Craig no since in waiting till they ban it  {:-P;;...just send it on to me ;).....that indeed is gorgeous...I love anything that is variegated...I wonder though if it is going to be bad to out grow the variegated like the other variety is...I have just the basic variegated umbrella and it only has a few variegated leaves now.... its mostly just green now  :'(....

Tim, I'm thinking it was a Palm Beach County ordinance under consideration and bot C. alternifoilus and Colocasia esculenta were on the "to be banned" list.  Will the state follow suit?  That I don't know...though it does list both as invasive exotics.

LeeAnne, have you seen the sport of Egyptian papyrus that is being sold as 'King Tut' and 'Dwarf Egyptian' among other names.  Looks very much like the original, but it is actually a fuller plant and mine have never gotten over 30" tall.

Hi Lawanna....as this one is coming out of a tissue culture lab, I have to think the variegation is more stable.  It is  usual for variegates to revert to normal forms in TC, which is way you seldom see many variegated plants in tissue culture.  The problem with this one may be supply.  They sent me one tray as a sample, but don't expect more to be ready until February, which is pushing it to have ready for this Spring.

No, I haven't seen the smaller Egyptian Papyrus locally but I'll keep an eye out.

Hi Bonnie,

No surprise, but not my favorite, if for no other reason than the tips like to brown up.  I will say that may be due to the winter conditions that are finally ending.  And it doesn't seem to like to be in standing water...again, that could change as the weather warms.

So if I had to pick just one Cyperus it wouldn't be this one...most likely the dwarf Egyptian would be my chose.
