foam!
« on: May 29, 2010, 06:29:35 PM »
I was wondering why our pond gets this foam every morning?  It's usually worse on cooler mornings, and disappears by mid-morning.  We have a UV filter in the skimmer, and another filter up on the waterfall that is fed from a bottom drain.

HMM just in the morning?? Got something to do with PH changes from temp maybe. What about a partial water change? Foam sometimes comes from too much DOC or spawning.

LOL @ Frank. UM, is there a particular odor out there? And are some of your fish missing scales?

Yes - comets and 1 koi.  They were spawning up a storm a few days ago but not that I've seen since.  It seems to get more foam in the early mornings especially when it's cooler out.

Yes spawning can make that foam...anytime I have spawning I do a large water change...the foam can also be caused from decomposing matter(DOC) .....it being worse in the morning---I'd say DOC...

I am pretty sure it's not from spawning - unless they spawn every single day, which I am not seeing!  I do believe it's from DOC, but why does it foam more in the morning when it's cooler out?

Lynn not sure why it does--maybe cooler temps maybe...but, when I've seen it---I noticed the same thing...just keep your pond as clean as possible from decaying leaves and plant matter and water changes will help it too...

Mine does the same thing.  At first I thought it was spawning, but I'm pretty sure I found the source.  My fish were digging in a few plants and kicking up kitty litter.  Now I'm repotting some and adding large gravel to all.  So far, so good!  If you look around, I'm sure you'll find the source.   Good luck!
