A pic of my climbing hydrangea
« on: June 06, 2010, 06:49:08 PM »
It has grown to be a monster in it's own right....that's what hubby gets.  I wanted a screened in front porch--someplace to sit out front without people seeing me on the porch... :)  Well, this almost works and it's better than nothing!

Thanks Joyce!  The little insects and bees love this plant   8)   I just have to stay on top of the Japanese Bean Beetles later on to keep them from stripping the plant.. :o

And I just realized my cat Maxwell is sleeping under it too--hadn't noticed that before!   :D

Beautiful Hydrangea o(:-) Looks like it might just head for the roof.
I thought you lived on a farm. Who would see you out there? ::)

That hydrangea would head for the roof if it had something to grow on.  It has very strong woody stems almost like runners.  The support it's on will break one of these days and we'll have to find a way to support it--probably with metal fence posts that will be hidden.

I DO live on a farm, unfortunately the road we live on is like a thorough-fare to a state road about 1/2 a mile away.  This old house was built way over 100 years ago when people didn't feel the need to travel the way they do now.  And the house was put too close to the road IMO, now you have to have many more feet of road frontage when you build.   8)  The country as we know it is vanishing.   :'(

how pretty!  I have 3 of them... gots a question..... Yours appears to have tons of branches.  Do you prune it back for it to get that full?   Mine is much taller and skinner.  maybe just 3 or so  climbing branches.   One of the 3 has had a few blooms for a couple years now nothing to great.  The two in more shade are much taller, same senario just a few stems but they are up into the trees.    I cant wait for mine to look like yours!

Thank you everyone!   ;)

I bought this plant years ago before I knew what it could really do.  I placed it in the shade:  it gets a little dappled morning sun and maybe a little afternoon sun from the west.  But in the early spring when this thing kicks in it tries to take over the 'inside' of the porch!  Yes Tink--I prune it if that's what you want to call it.  I just start cutting branches off here and there so we can walk around on the inside of the porch.   ::)  I trim the sides becuz it blocks access to the step up to the porch and also trim towards the ground since it tries to crawl out into the yard.  Maybe that's why it is so full.  It has a mind of its own and I just try to contain it.  If you give it something to grow on, it will keep going forever.  I give it occasionally an acid fertilizer, but it doesn't act like it makes any difference.

Beautiful plant...we had one at our old house....We named him the "Green Man"
It was on the east side of our porch and seemed very happy with the morning sun
You can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right

Thanks Freddie, this one is on the north side of the house and gets just a bit of sun in the early morning and late afternoon.  And it likes lots of water!   :o
