The late John Wooden
« on: June 12, 2010, 09:09:26 AM »
The papers here have been filled with tales of the legendary coach.  I was lucky enough to have met him as well as have a long time correspondence.
My favorite story was that about the then firebrand Bill Walton.  When the coach told Bill he would have to cut his long hair, Bill said "NO coach  I have a right to have my hair long!"
John Wooden replied, "Yes Bill you have that right, and I have the right to not have you on the team!"  "We will miss you Bill."   Bill jumped on his bike and rushed to Westwood and got a haircut.  Coach gave him 15 minutes to comply.  Bill got back 5 minutes late and prayed the coach didn't notice.

so true.
I will find his "pyramid of success" and post it,

The guys all laughed when he showed them how to properly put on their socks and basketball shoes.
A few years later the players got to see other teams practice and were shocked it was such shambles!

I like it.  My legs are still good, but the rest of me is not.
Vickie, did you see the parable? O0

Those shorts look short by today's standards, I am old enough to remember them when they were shorter  :o!  Nowadays the shorts are down to the knees.
I like the 'pyramid of success'.  I have to lead the whole bank on the Monday, July 12th Huddle call.  The leader usually talks about our core values (lead by example, making our community better etc.) or shares an inspirational story.  I think Coach Wooden's pyramid of success  will make for a nice topic that morning.

Thank you, Jerry!

Thanks Brian, so glad you can use it. the coach would be too.  He started with basics.  The guys all ::) rolled their eyes when he told them how to put on their basketball shoes and socks.
To this day I think of him everytime I put on mine! o(:-)

Love the shorts. LOL. Today's gym shorts even often go below the knees and I think they look so uncomfortable.
