How weird is this??
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:21:31 PM »
I've heard of hardy lilies being viviparous but have never seen one until now.

This is a Joey Tomocik lily.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.

That is pretty odd.  I've never seen that from any of my hardies.

Are you sure it is a Joey Tomocik.  I'm not saying that Joey won't do that although I do have a big bed of it and I have never seen it happen.   Also the plant that you show looks to me that it could be Col. AJ Welch.  I have AJ Welch and it does that quite often.   They could be easily confused with each other because both Joey and AJ have leaves with only a VERY lightly marbled top surface that turns all green rapidly as well as lightly speckeled under surface that is similar in both plants and of course the flower is similar although Joey is much deeper yellow and the petals are wider and have a particular pinched in look that I can't realy describe to the very tips of the petals that I don't see in any other comercialy available yellows.  Also AJ is the greenest hardy that I know of and has a greenish cast to the outer petals that you won't see in Joey.

If you post a pic of some well developed flowers I may be able to nail down it's ID. for you.

In the mean time here are some pics of Joey and a Viviparous colorado flower that has double the amount of petals around the outside of the first ring of stamens.  Inside the first ring of stamens is a second ring of stamens and three more flowers coming out of the carple disk, or what would be a carple disk, inside that and one of those flowers is viviparous. It also has 6 sepals.  Grow enough lilies and you will see some strange things.

If your plant does turn out to be an AJ then I recomend that you trash it and get a realy good yellow like Texas Dawn or Perry's Double Yellow and you will be Much happier.

As simply a personal opinion based on my experience another yellow to avoid is Yellow Queen.  It may be a good plant in a pot for others but I have had a small bed of it for years and I can't remember the last time I saw a flower on it.   Other yellows planted right next to it bloom like mad.

Great pics, all. One of the great benefits of this hobby is that there are exciting "finds" constantly, whether it be insects, frogs, or animals, or maybe just the plants themselves give interesting finds.
Thanks for sharing yours.

I bought this lily as a Joey Tomocik, probably 8 or 9 years ago......It's been so long that I no longer remember where I got it....This is the first I've ever seen it do this.....

Turtlemike,
When I saw the vivps I wondered if maybe the lily was something different than Joey Tomocik....Here are some pictures I took of it blooming today.....Is it god enough for you to get an idea of what it might be?

Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.

That looks a lot like Joey to me.  If it is then we can add another one to the list that will do that.
